Installation of SME7.1 in VMware Workstation 6
« on: July 04, 2007, 08:01:15 PM »
I used the following settings to install SME7.1 server in VMware Workstation 6, and everything went smoothly, except when I picked option 3. in the server console to test internet connectivity, it failed. I don't know if it's a VMware problem or SME problem.

Settings for VM:

-direct connect to both my DVDs
-2 network cards, one "bridged"  for external
the other is "bridged" for internal
-2 virtual hard drives if you want RAID

SME7.1 Installation:

-Start VM with SME7.1 server disc in drive
-picked smei586 install
 (maybe shouldn't have done that)

Configure SME Console:

-primary domain name: mycompany.local
-system name for my server: vmsme7-1
-Local IP address: 192.168.237.1
-subnet mask: 255.255.255.0
-chose server & gateway
-chose server & gateway dedicated
-chose eth1 as local, eth0 as external
-use Static IP
-used my static IP address
-subnet mask 255.255.255.0
-gateway IP is 24.247.47.4.1 (don't know if I
 should have used this.)
-DHCP for local network = on
-DHCP range begin 192.168.237.65
-DHCP range end   192.168.237.250
-corporate DNS server address is "blank"

How about some more details of your 'net connection..   such as modem then router then host machine or maybe just modem then host machine.

Also, what is the IP of your host machine?

William

OK, I went into Control Panel, Network connections: there are the following 3:

Settings for Local area connection:

Address type: assigned by DHCP
IP Address:      24.247.4.174
Subnet Mask:     255.255.252.0
Default Gateway: 24.247.4.1
DHCP Server:     68.114.36.6
DNS Servers:     24.247.15.53
                 24.247.24.53

Settings for VMware Network Adapter VMnet1:

Type: manually configured
IP Address:      192.168.247.1
Subnet Mask:     255.255.255.0

Settings for VMWare Network Adapter VMnet8:

Type: manually configured
IP Address:      192.168.176.1
Subnet Mask:     255.255.255.0

Ok.

Going by your other post and this one I think you need to use NAT for you VM NIC.

Under Edit >> Virtual Network Settings, the DHCP and NAT tabs should give you the info for setting up your SME external interface.

This is assuming that your ISP only gives you one ip address.

SME doesn't recognize my NVida drivers
« Reply #4 on: July 11, 2007, 06:54:04 PM »
I tried installing SME7.1 server straight to my hard drive (not in VMware) and it still couldn't get me internet connectivity, so no wonder it doesn't work in VMWare either.

Let me also warn others, that when SME installs, it not only wipes out your hard drives, it repartitions them, and formats them.

It took me all day to be able to put my winxp back on my computer. I had no program that could read the disk in order to reformat it. I ended up having to install dos6.22, and then winxp, then use disk manager to repartition my hard drive the size it was before so that I could put back my backup image I made before I installed SME server.  It took several repetitions of this to finally get the exact size partition so the backup image would fit.

In a nutshell, before you wipe out your winxp system to experiement with installing SME server, make sure you have a good backup, and if your backup is an image, make sure you know how big your partition is.

Hopefully, SME Server will eventually be able to recognize my NVidia drivers, until then I will have to wait to use it. Even if NVidia made drivers for linux systems, I wouldn't know how to install it, and you might need different drivers for different Linux distros.

I thought a big red box pops up to warn you of this.

SMEServer is designed to be the only OS on your harddrive.

You are talking about Nvidia Nforce Network Drivers?

Put a cheap Realtek network card in.

As far as I can remember, it warns you of formatting all your hard drives, it never said it would repartition them too. The formatting I was prepared for by unplugging my other hard drive, the reformatting was a rude surprise.

Sorry, my Nvidia drivers are built into the mother board, and I'm not going to get another board...kind of takes away from the idea of 'free software' doesn't it?

You can't expect a linux sistem to work on a NTFS partition. It has to create it's own partitions. And it's not a SME fault. Every linux OS would do the same thing and it's your fault if you didn't predict that or done some homework. The only difference is that this OS saves you the problems of managing partitions because it does that for the user so he doesn't have to.

He didn't say another board. He said another NIC. You can disable the one that's not recognised then.
"It should just work" if it doesn't report it. Thanks!

Check on the Centos 4 forums to see if they can help

http://www.centos.org

or get drivers from Nvidia

you have set both cards as bridged, so they will be using VMnet0

If you want to use VMnet1 and VMnet8, you need to select one nic as NAT (VMnet8) and the other as Host Only (VMnet1).

Correct. Shouldn't have, but it probably won't cause you any pain.

gateway IP should point to your VMWare gateway (<VMWare nat'd address range you specified>.2)

Good Luck
