Yes I believe there was a post regarding this by Gordon Rowell. Search also on delegate mail server.
It may have been elsewhere, devinfo mail list or bugzilla, anyone else remember it ?

Its tedious initially but setup the SME server with the same usernames and passwords that are used for the Windows network. SME might even force the Windows passwords to be changed and made stronger. After that its just regular user maintenance as people come and go. Once the users are on SME you can also set the Internet Proxy to authenticate which is useful in stopping unauthorized use of the Internet when people bring in their laptops and plug them into the damn network if you are using DHCP. The Internet tracking can bring many a user unstuck!

Using the method outlined in the link provided earlier, you do not need to do that.

I doubt it Ray. The link you give describes a network with Exchange as the mail server, and SME server just as an inbound mail gateway. Francois says he wants to use SME server as the mail server.

Exactly. I want to avoid Exchange.

The system currently has a Windows Server 2003 Domain Controller which I can't replace, and I need to add a mail server to this setup as quickly, reliably and cheaply as possible, for up to 300 users. Imagine how handy it would be if I could create all my users on AD and give them mail accounts on SME. SME is great by itself, but it needs to be more "integrateable". Another reason for using SME is that it will sit directly on the internet, so the security features of SME are attractive, and I simply don't want a Windows box on a public IP.

this is such a critical step towards making SME a viable MS server (especially Exchange) killer, one would think that there would be more interrest in the subject. What do the developers think about it?

You should make a NFR in the bugtracker (that's a general recomendation for all the features you'd like to see in SME).
