Topic: Losing Faith in SME

The last two revs of SME have been great improvements, but it is still falls short for my needs.

1. Stability/Flaky (It seems like every time you add a module or an update you can count on something else breaking)
Don't get me wrong SME is stable, it's when you add an module from the installer or updates it has always caused issues that take up allot of time to go through and search for who else out there is having the same issues and what caused the issues and how to correct the issue, It's hard to sell and keep clients on SME when issues like these arise, I guess what I'm saying is maybe a better support system.  I know all others have there issues to, but I don't seem to have as many issues with Fedora or Windose installations and support.

2. Backup Options (It's a battle every time I install another SME server and have to get the External hard drive and tape drive working)
With Fedora or Windose it's a snap to get tape and usb drives working and the backup options are open to using a number of backup software solutions that are out there.

3. Hardware Drivers (I Know it's the hardware vendors that need to step up to the plate, but SME (CentOS) seems like there is a lack of driver support compared to other distros).

4. Hostel Forums (Lately it seems that the smeserver forums have been getting hostel, new users and old users having issues come to this forum to seek advise and guidance from installation to supporting the SMESERVER project and the responses are getting more vague, rude or just outright brutal attacks because someone didn't know where to look or how to look for answers from the forums)

I'm not posting this to slam SME (SME IS A GREAT PRODUCT)

Are there others out there that have something about SME that is just nagging them?????

My clients are always looking for other alternatives to Microsoft products for many reasons like cost, (upfront and long term), features, manageability, support, and etc.

I do have several clients on SMESERVER and they are love that the only cost for them was hardware and installation vs software cost, licensing cost, hardware and installation.

I sell most of my clients to try SMESERVER and with the understanding that if they like it or are having issues with it I will convert them back over to Microsoft or Fedora at no cost to them.

Now why I posted this was because most of the SMESERVER installs go great, it’s when the customer wants to add or change something, such as add a USB drive to their backup solution or a tape drive to their backup solution or add a module from server manager, issues after issue.
My Fedora and Windows clients don’t seem to have as many issues, that is all that I’m saying.

And it’s only really been the in the 7x that I have been seeing more issues, is it because there are more modules or is it the CentOS?

I’m not blasting SME at all; it is one of best alternatives to Microsoft SBS 2003.

Now looking at your response from my post it looks a little hostile to me and that is what I’m talking about, do a search on your forum for “hostile” there seems to be a lot of results.

I use the forum all the time, I can usually find what I looking for or I’ll find it out on Google.

So basically my post was to inform you that I see some areas that are of concern and would hope that it would be looked at as an opportunity find out what issues are the real deal killers and discuss what can be done to aid or resolve such issues.

IMHO:
Fedora is for desktop
CentOS aka RHEL, Redhat Enterprise Linux is for servers

Fedora and RHEL has two different approaches:
RHEL is stability and reliability in focus and
Fedora has a more "fit everywhere" approach.


And an advice:
When I started to work with SME ~2003 i started to qualify which software and hardware I could get working reliably, to believe that ALL hardware and software will work is a bit naive.

And if you don't want to donate mone, start to donate development resources or knowledge, the wiki system is excellent for knowledge

So start chipping in and help to solve the driver/backup situation, try to help finding a solution that is working, be positive and share your findings!

I don't see anywhere where you ask what you yourself can do to help, nor anywhere where you offer any assistance. Hence to me your post is yet another complaint that SME server is inadequate for your needs.

If you make money from selling SME server installation and support, then you should be contributing cash to support its ongoing development. If you don't, you have no-one to blame but yourself (and the dozens or hundreds like you) that ongoing development is slower than you would like.

This am I find that the mail server was going wide open. Seems some ip from China wanted to send some mail.

I have never had SME hacked before, even when I had many more open ports.

I wish I new more about Linux and security, so I could give an intelligent insight into what happened, but with my limited knowledge all I know is that as SME has improved, I find myself trying more and more alternatives.

Not meant to flame a great product, just wondering if simple wasn't better.

As a disabled person,and very limited funds, open source is a great pastime to take the mind off being mal functioning, so I'm not really griping  as much as commenting.
