Vista and the SME Domain
« on: April 02, 2007, 07:21:36 AM »
I have already posted this question last month & followed the bug related to it but that does not seem to be the fix for my problem.  I can't get vista to join our domain...  I have the latest version of Samba installed but this has not solved the issue.  Is there anybody who has managed to join vista to the SME domain?

Why post a new question then? It would have been better if you followed up in that thread.

Do you mean bug 2256 and this forum thread? Did you try both options suggested there?

I have sucessfully installed Vista and logged it onto an SME 7.1.3 with no problems at one of my clients. It seemed to work just like XP Pro did.

cheers

Vista on an SME domain

I had a few problems setting up my Vista Workstation on my SME domain. This may seem and obvious tip but it got me stumped for hours. I always setup my XP and 2k workstations using the manual method not the wizard and this always worked much better for me. But Vista will not play ball using the manual method. Use the wizard.  Make all the changes to the security settings you would for XP Pro then use the Network Wizard to hook up. Make sure the account you are using is an admin rated account on your SME box. Sorry if this seems obvious but hey it worked for me.

I have a pair of plain vanilla Vista Business machines that I'm trying to join to a domain on an SME box.

SME was at 7rc2 and recently upgraded to 7.1.3 with all the available updates. Other XP and 2000 Pro clients have no problem connecting to the domain. I did the secpol change on the Vista machines to Send LM & NTLM and use NTLMv2 session security if negotiated. All firewalls and anti-virus programs are disabled.

I keep getting access denied errors when trying to join the domain, both manually and using the wizard. The Vista machines can successfully connect with SME as a Windows workgroup.

I checked the bugtracker, particularly 2256, but I have a feeling it's a problem on my side with a security setting buried somewhere.

Before I go nuts tracing down the issue, has anyone successfully joined Vista Business to an SME domain? If so, what am I missing?

John G,
I take it you have changed the encripted secuity elements within the local policies/security options. Microsoft Network Client Digitaly sign comunications (always) disabled, Microsoft Network Client Digitaly sign comunications (if server agrees) disabled, Microsoft Network Client Send unecrypted password to third-party smb servers disabled.

From what you have posted and my interpritation this is the only thing I can think of you may not have not done.

If you 2k and xp boxes hock up then you must be using the correct account.

other that the above you have done all that I did. and as previously stated the only thing my beast would not accept at this point was the manual method.

Good luck

Okay let me get this straight ...  you are unable to veiw you sme server under the network in vista ?

What version of vista are you using ?

Are you logging in as the same account name that is on the sme server ?
Is your network static or dhcp ?
