Users ... gotta love 'em.

Once upon a time, a client was promised DSL by B***S***h.  This spurred them to (finally!) wire their offices and set up a network for sharing the fast connection.  Install tech comes ... too far along the local loop, no DSL = angry client.  So I hurriedly threw into service a disused Win98SE box doing connection sharing of a dialup.  So it stayed for many months, despite my wanting to change to ANYTHING else.  (FreeSCO, hardware router, *anything*!)

Finally, they recognize the need for file & print services.  So I take the Win98 box, which is a reasonably powerful machine, and turn it into a Mitel server sharing the dialup connection and offering file & print services.  Much rejoicing (yayyy).

Two days later, I get a frantic call from the boss of the accounting dept ... seems she was posting to her General Ledger (data stored of course via Mitel) and the system froze up.  No Internet for anybody, no file services.  I get there, the Mitel box is happily up, but her general ledger is destroyed.

Me = puzzled.  A Mitel box, crashing?  Unprecedented in my experience!

To make a long investigation short, when the machine had been a Win98 box they'd experienced frequent Internet lockups.  One guy had taken it upon himself to just push the reset button and eventually, up came the connection again.

You guessed it ... his Internet had hiccupped so off he went to the comms closet ... where the machine, outwardly the same, sat ... and he blithely did as he always had done.  Goodbye Mitel, goodbye general ledger ... Hello, backups!

Good thing they HAD a backup!

Yup, only troubles I have ever had with e-smith all relate to users and power plugs...What, you mean a server needs to be plugged in ? Can't I just run my phase 3 arc welder off the same plug ?
Mind you, I did kill my system by dropping a monitor onto it's exposed network cards ;) Took me 20 minutes to coax it back into life.
