Hi guys,
I've been having trouble sharing files on my local network.  (I've searched and looked through the wiki and man etc. before posting)  I'm also pretty new so forgive me if this is dumb.

I've set up a new user account on my server via the server manager and enabled it etc, but when I try to access the server from another machine (windows) in my workgroup, it won't let me log on.  Normally I would think that I'd gotten some setting wrong, but when I try to log on with the admin account it works fine  .  I've also tried to create the new account via the command line on the server, but while it created the account fine, I still can't log on with the new account (on a separate note, the account created via the command line doesn't show in the server manager even though I know the account works )  If anyone has any ideas I'd really appreciate it.

What do you mean by 'when I try to access the server from another machine'? Are you just trying to access your file shares via network browser? Or log in to the server-manager (eg. http://<your server>/server-manager)? Or log in via a shell account?

If you set up your workstations and smeserver in the same workgroup the shares (via ibays) should be visible when you browse.

You will have needed to set the permissions in the ibays so that your users are in groups that have the appropriate access rights to those ibays (all about iBays).

Sorry about the vagueness of that.  I simply meant I was viewing the computers that are in my workgroup (via network neighborhood or the like) and double-clicking the server computer icon which would then prompt for the username and pass...

Hmm, that still isn't as clear as I'd like it to sound but I can't think how to word it 

I think I found the problem about 2 min ago.  I was reading about the 12 character limit for the username, and I wondered if that might apply to passwords as well, it never crossed my mind before that it applied to passwords  .  but I changed the password to less than 12 characters and it works fine.  I thought it had to be something simple I was missing  ...

I'm such a noobie

Well, you may have pointed out something that most people don't know (and probably won't ever hit... ). I'd be inclined to raise it as a bug (or at least a New feature Request). Then you'd get an answer as to whether this is an intended limitation (or just an extension of the username behaviour), and potentially highlight something that maybe even the developers hadn't noticed.
