Sometimes the connection to the isp is out ( happens to everybody )

Is there a way that users are informed that the message could not be sent out by the sme ( stay in qeue ) ?

Normally messages are kept in a queue for a while (24 hours most of the time) and the server will try to deliver the message in the mean time, if it does not succeed most servers deliver a message with an error code and some explanation why it was not able to send/deliver the message. AFAIK SME Server does this as well.

ok - maybe after several hours.

Actually we would need instant notification or maybe even a message
1) by em to the sender
2) or even better a windows on the smeserver how many emails are in the outgoing qeue

... but maybe I should post this to the wishlist

There is a contrib doing this:  smeserver-saco-qmHandle-1.3.1-1.noarch.rpm
Go: http://distro.ibiblio.org/pub/linux/distributions/smeserver/contribs/saco/contrib/
Check the Bugtracker for a bug with this contrib, not a major drama.

Yes, please enter a New Feature Request (RFT) at Bugzilla.

If it does not work out of the box, please fill in a Bug Report @ Bugzilla (http://bugs.contribs.org)  - check: http://wiki.contribs.org/Bugzilla_Help .  Thanks.

qmail will keep trying for 7 days before advising the original sender that the message cannot be delivered.
Many systems use qmail, not just sme server, so you won't reliably know that a message was never delivered until after 7 days, although some mail servers are set for one or two days.

edit
I'd also add that if the external mail server you are sending to is down, then your sme server will generate this message after approx 10 hours

This is an automatically generated Delivery Status Notification.

THIS IS A WARNING MESSAGE ONLY.

YOU DO NOT NEED TO RESEND YOUR MESSAGE.

Delivery to the following recipients has been delayed.

              <recipient@externaldomain.com>

The reason for the problem:
4.4.2 - Bad connection 'timeout'

Not the perfect solution. I do use this,

http://www.socomms.com/contrib/smeserver-ipdown-1.0.0-01.noarch.rpm

Emails admin when pppoe is down or reconnected.

In my case a modem firmware upgrade fixed the problem. Average 6 dropouts per day lasting 2 min.
Though, I did point the finger at the ISP.

A word of warning, rpm has not been announced (waiting for Sftp password) therfore only beta testing from myself.
