DNS and controlling domainname.com
« on: August 28, 2007, 04:53:17 PM »
Hello,

I can very easily set up a virtual domain, for instance, www.domainname.com to point to an outside web server, but how do I set the domainname.com (minus the host name) to also point the same outside web server?

Should I just create record in hosts points the the outside web server, or am I missing something.

/etc/e-smith/templates-custom/etc/hosts/30domainname.com

  Thanks.

Use the domains panel to delegate domainname.com to Internet name servers.

Hello,

Mydomain.com local is used to receive mail and is the PDC on my network in Server-gateway mode.
Mydomain.com is hosted somewhere else, and is not accessible in my network.
I tried to fix this problem, but i can use some little help on this.

When i use the IP of www.mydomain.com, the internetpage of the webdesigners shows up.

Adding a rule with www.mydomain.com, with internet DNS server option on, was not the solution.

Thanks,,

Jaapie,

I don't understand the question.  Perhaps it's as simple as setting the www.mydomain.com to be a remote address with the IP of your remove web server (webdesigners).

Indeed, using the Hostnames panel of the server manager.

OK, that is almost working, :P

But there is no IP adress of www.mydomain.com.
I found an IP adress by pinging www.mydomain.com.
When using this IP adress in a browser, I get: www.the_internet_site_of_the_web_designers.com.

I can not make a rule with "www", "remote" and leave the IP blank. IP must be used.

also web.mydomain.com should work, but the server said:

The requested URL could not be retrieved

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

While trying to retrieve the URL: http://web.mydomain.com/

The following error was encountered:

Unable to determine IP address from host name for web.mydomain.com
The dnsserver returned:

Name Error: The domain name does not exist.
This means that:

The cache was not able to resolve the hostname presented in the URL.
Check if the address is correct.
Your cache administrator is admin@mydomain.com.

The server didn't search on the ISP's DNS, for *.mydomain.com

I hope that you know what to do....

Jaapie,

There are two ways to do this.

  1.  Use outside DNS from a place like your web designers DNS servers.
  2.  Configure your server to understand that www.domainname.com is the "remote" address with the correct IP.

Yes... you must put in an IP address for "www".  This should be the IP address of the web designer's server.  I hope I understood you.  What is you first language?

jfarshman,

Using the DNS from an outsite place would be a great solution, how to configure this?
The IP solution isn't working for my situation.

My first language is Dutch.

Thanks for replying.

Jaapie,

I can understand some spoken Dutch because I lived in Aachen for awhile, but I cannot write it.

To control outside DNS, you need a company/service.  I do not know about most services, but for $35/year I use EasyDNS (eashdns.com).  There are cheaper places, but EasyDNS will catch all my email if we have a (power) outage... and send the email to the SME later.  Other people will probably suggest different services.  I think godaddy.com does DNS

I think you will find that using the Ip address in the ("www") hostnames panel that you get when you ping the external web site (you may have to do the ping this from another system), works DESPITE it apparently not working when you just type in the IP address in a browser.  Try it.

Tried it,
After disable HTTP-proxy, it still did'n work.
In the internet options, LAN-settings, i disabled Checking connection automaticly, now it runs fine!!
(only tested over dialing in by VPN and then RDP 1 of the PC's)

Thanks to you all,
