The manual is incorrect and it needs to be updated.

The 2 gig limit for backing up to desktop has been recently resolved.  People have successfully backed up even larger amounts (like 80GB)

You will not be able to restore a >2GB .tar file using restore from desktop.  That limit has not been fixed.  You can however copy the >2GB file to a usb disk and use the new "restore from usb" option (SME7.2) during install to restore large datasets.

In terms of USB disk, do you mean a regular drive in a USB enclosure or one of those sealed HP drives that are fully powered from the USB port.  I'm not sure if they're formatted to FAT or NTFS.  Can you give some information on that?

You can use both, but as long as a regular hd in a usb enclosure has the correct psu as there are some problems being reported, I'd get one already as per, there cheap enough these days.

Wouldn't matter as you can format the hard drive when you get it, recommended to format with a valid partition table and ext3.

Do you have a bug reference for that, Paul? The most recent change I can see is bug 178, which fixes speed of backup to desktop, but not size limitation. Size limitation is noted as fixed in apache 2.2, which will be coming with SME8.

Caveats:
Must use FireFox and have a hard drive (like NTFS) that supports >4GB files.

And my memory is not so good anymore, it was a 56GB file that was successfully backed up and not 80GB.  56, 80, they are both MUCH larger than 4

Hi all

Curious about backup to desktop with the standard default backup in SME 7.1xx

When in the backup panel the system says this:
Currently your configuration and data files total approximately 7Gb

So I believe most of that data is in my ibays ?
I'm assuming I can manually transfer this to a hard drive on the desktop and backup to desktop once I get the file size down low enough ?? Unless I'm missing something ?

Does the backup to desktop feature include the ibays or not ? I'm just trying to determine if the large data is caused by this or something else ?

In this case I could just transfer those ibays to desktop and then use the standard backup restore feature as long as I can get the file below the suggested 2GB, which should be simple enough since I only have a few users on the server and email etc. ?

Yes, as I'm sure has been answered here multiple times. Plus I'd be surprised if it weren't also documented. Please open a Documentation bug if the documentation does not indicate that data in i-bays is included in backup.

There is an overview at the top of the page that suggests:Data in ibays and user folders is temporarily moved to a temp folder, which will not be included in the backup.
Further down on the page I see under the heading of Standard backup section it shows the /home/e-smith as part of the backup.

I do understand that your telling me that ibays are included. and further down on that same page is indicated also.

There is an overview at the top of the page that suggests:Data in ibays and user folders is temporarily moved to a temp folder, which will not be included in the backup.

That overview is of a server-to-server procedure which uses the 'backup to desktop' procedure to backup just config data, which it does by temporarily 'hiding' user and ibay data. IMO there should be a big bold warning on that page - I think it's a bad idea.

Nevertheless, the specific URL you were given was just to the backup file list part of that page.

If I simply move all my ibay data to a desktop, then do a backup, then restore to fresh SME box, then move the ibays data back to their locations ?
Will there be any problems with permissions etc.??
I realize the mention about permissions from the documentation is referring to (server to server) topics but I was curious.

Probably. But then that will depend exactly what tools you use to 'move' the data.
