I want to try out Asterisk on a test VMWare SME 7.2 installation. It is running kernel 2.6.9-55.0.6.ELsmp. I don't have any pci cards installed although I plan to add an FX0 card at some time. I tried to install sail-2.1.15, smeserver-asterisk-1.2.20 and smeserver-asterisk-zappi-MPP-1.2.13. It installs but Asterisk does not start. I get a line 114 and line 118 error "unary operator expected". It then says waiting for UDEV for a long time. Can someone give me a few hints?

2.1.15 is for asterisk 1.4 ONLY.  You would need to install 2.1.14 with asterisk 1.2.  Have a look at the release tables in the documentation here...

That should get you up and running.  SAIL/Asterisk runs fine under VMware but I'm not sure about TDM cards and how they are allocated under VM.
