New Smtp Server
« on: September 13, 2007, 02:51:21 PM »
Hi,

I've been running SME for years, but I have always used an external smtp server.  Well there has been a change in our need and now and internal smtp server is required.  So I've got it up and running and got spamassissan running as per the instructions from the contribs/wiki.  But now I got a problem.  We can email only internally, but we cannot reply to any of our customers.  When we do we get a message saying we can not rely.  How do I fix this?

First you need to actually read the message you get saying that you cannot reply. That message will contain specific text which will indicate *why* your replies are not getting to their destination. What do those messages say exactly?

Here is the exact message.  Changed the email address to protect the inoccent.

Sending failed:
Message sending failed since the following recipients were rejected by the
server:
myemal@email.ca (The server responded: "relaying denied myemail@email.ca")
The message will stay in the 'outbox' folder until you either fix the problem
(e.g. a broken address) or remove the message from the 'outbox' folder.
The following transport protocol was used:

You are attempting to relay via an SMTP server which won't relay on your behalf. This is either a problem with the MX record for email.ca, or, more likely, you have configured a "SmartHost" which is not the SMTP server your ISP wants you to use, or your ISP insists that you use authentication before relaying, and you have not configured SME to authenticate.

Oh I would like to add that we are a small business with 3 locations.  The main office which house the server and to satetille stores.  The other store in the East and we are in the West, the East store is having none of the problems.  At first I thought this was a relaying problem, but if this was the case then both the East and us the West stores should be experiencing the same problem?

Okay, what info can I give you so we can confirm this?  And/or what commands, logs etc...

Just to clarify...
The other stores were also switched to the new "internal" server? Or nothing has changed at the other stores?

That is right we are all now using the new internal server.

Only the office where the server is located is considered internal.  The other two offices are considered external and will need to configure smtp auth over ssl in order to be able to send email to addresses that aren't hosted on the server.

That is right.  One has no problem with relaying, while I on the other hand can't relay at all.  There are two differences between the  2 location my is Linux shop that use Kontact/Kmail and the other location is a Windows shop using Outlook.  The only other thing I can think of that is different between the 2 location is that we have different IP addresses though we are both with the same ISP.

Is there a way to enable relay, but just for my IP?
