USB ADSL - Help please
« on: March 25, 2002, 03:29:45 PM »
I have searched these forums and found a couple of threads which say it is possible to use esmith with a alcatel speedtouch modem. Ive also found this link http://linux-usb.sourceforge.net/SpeedTouch/howto.html

I am no expert in linux whixh is exacly why I love esmith.

There is also mention on the other threads of a french archive that has details of how to make this work. Unfortunately I dont speak french.

SO...Please is there anyone who can offer an english howto for esmith and alcatel speedtouch usb. Im going to have to move and will loose my cable modem (ethernet) and be forced to BTs adsl (adsl). I know this feature would be greatly appreciated here in the UK.

thanks in advance for any assistance

I've tried this for my brothers ADSL connection ( I went NTL, so it doesn't bother me ).

In the end, we had to re-install esmith twice, after really screwing it up with new libraries and kernels.

We gave up, and bought an ethernet adsl modem ( £100 If I remember correctly )

Only problem is that his esmith server is now on a private ip ( BT !! ) not a public, but with port forwarding and nat it works.

If you need any more info let me know.

thanks for you reply.

I have been informed by BT I have to buy the usb modem from them, cant use an ethernet one.

I REEEEAALY need my box to work directly onto the wan for many reasons. I know it can work, as many in france appear to achieve it, but I just cant speak french (or learn it in the next 2 weeks).

any other helpers out there? Have you guys moved to Kanata yet? are you reading this? is there any intention in development for this sort of support?

TIA
andy

Snip.

Tell them to take a running jump and get  a Nildram 'wires only' installation. Then you can use any hardware you like. The install is £50 and the monthly rental is £25.52.

Thanks for the advise. I have been looking around and will probably get a wires only service, but still have the usb problem as getting a basic bridging ethernet to adsl modem is expensive Id like to go for the speedtouch still.

So anyone from Mitel listening? cmon guys can you offer some help atall???

My e-smith server is fronted by an IpCop firewall (minimal hardware), and that works fine with the Alcatel Speedtouch.

However I see no reason why the Alcatel shouldn't work "out of the box", although you'll need to upload the Speedtouch driver which I can send you, or you can get from the Alcatel web site.

CMS have Edimax adsl to ethernet access servers at 75pounds plus VAT. They work very well.

Thanks Brian,

At the moment finances are restricted and I dont have any spare hardware, although your IPcop idea appears to support it so Its certainly a good idea if I can find a spare pc with a usb port.

I agree the usb modem should work with esmith, however I get the feeling theres problems because the kernel? is older on esmith than the drivers need? and not being technical in linux I have no idea where to start/if this can be put right. Although as I said earlier it appears some french esmith users have got this working.

Im now stuck. desperately dont want to loose my esmith box.

Andrew.. I am in EXACTLY the same position as you!  The only alternative for me is to use win98 with connection sharing or something.. but that makes me want to vomit.

Why not get a adsl reuter ?

That why you can plug straight into the e-smith server.

In the UK you can get them from

https://www.dsl-warehouse.co.uk/acatalog/Single_Port_Ethernet.html

its a single ethernet port reuter that you plug straight into your e-smith server.

Just in case folks arn't aware of them, the lowest price examples of combined ADSL modem and router are currently...

SMC Barricade SMC7401 BRA-UK  [country suffix will vary, I'm in the UK]
    MRi external ADSL modem/router MRi-ADSLR

Both are avaialble in the UK for about 85GBpounds. Everything else I've seen costs a lot more than that. I've used 8 or 9 of the SMC units with first class results but I haven't tried the MRi unit since its quite new.

Even better would be to get a (presumably much cheaper) ADSL modem.
