I disagree with the earlier comments, the standard sme backup/restore is designed to allow restores to newer versions of the sme OS. If you have lots of modifications made to your server, then yes you need to be careful, but if done correctly using a "standard" method ie one of the built in backup/restore programs it should be OK. The DAR2 system recovery backup job should also restore OK to newer versions as that essentially follows the sme standard backup/restore routines. If you have modified the backup job in any way, then you could have issues, and that is perhaps what the earlier poster is referring to.
You can safely upgrade from 7.1 to 7.3, just heed the warnings in the FAQ, particularly re yum repositories.
You would also be able to backup on 7.1 and restore to 7.3 quite safely too, assuming you are doing a standard sme backup.
If doing any major upgrade, you should always do a backup just in case something goes wrong, at least you can restore the system to a fresh install of the sme OS in that event.
For doing point release upgrades ie 7.1 to 7.2 to 7.3, there is no need to go via the backup restore path, just pop the CD in and do the upgrade, or easier still just do
yum upgrade
Your DAR issues are probably related to using the Linux desktop, as per your other posts. It has been suggested to you to try a DAR backup to a Windows workstation, as they are both well proven, so please try that first.
