DNS Questions
« on: September 24, 2007, 06:56:21 PM »
Hello, Folks -

We are about to take over DNS for our domain from our ISP. They are going to point to our base url, and we are going to do the rest.

If I have a situation where I want a given ibay to be reachable by domainname.org and www.domainname.org, do I set up 2 different domains, domainname.org and www.domainname.org, pointing to the same ibay, or do I do something with hostnames?

Thanks -

Mark

That's the default setting for domains in SME server. Add 'domainname.org' as a domain, and then set up DNS correctly so that both domainname.org and www.domainname.org resolve to the IP address of the server.

Thanks, Mr. Brady.

We also have a host that need to be www2.(domain).org that is on the same server. Would I then set up the domain, point it to the right ibay,  and delete all the added entries (www.www2., mail.www2, etc.)?

Thanks again

Mark

Be aware that sme will provide the DNS service only for the local network. You could always use one of the free dns providers (such as zoneedit that allows you dns for five free zones).

And do not add www2 as a domain. You only need to add domainname.org as domain, and setup www2 under Hostnames and addresses.

Hope this helps you,
Ioan

No, you would need to add www2.domainname.org as a domain if you wanted to control the web content provided from that domain. You will also need to configure www2.domainname.org in external DNS (which is not managed by SME server).

That makes no sense - you cannot point DNS to a "base URL". DNS needs to be delegated to at least two correctly configured DNS servers. DNS management is best left to those who know exactly how to set it up correctly.
