hosts update for 7.x
« on: September 29, 2007, 11:13:15 PM »
Hi guys,

I remember on 6.x there was a contrib which changed the last login from pc-00135.mydomain to the hostname of the computer which did the last login, such as last login from: adminpc.mydomain.  I can't seem to find reference to such a plugin on the forums, contribs, or google and typing updating hostname gets me lots of info on dynamic DNS which is not what I want to do.  If this plugin is available, what is the name, and is it compatible with 7.x..?

Thanks,
Robert

Snoble, I don't believe that is what rmclay is asking as I would like this functionality as well. From memory there was a security reason for this, using pcxxx.domain.local as opposed to the FQDN of the PC.  In your example it would be appropriate for static IPs but that does not hold for PCs that use DHCP. The computers using DHCP don't register there names in the DNS.

 Hi Girkers,

Yes this is what I am referring to.  There used to be an RPM which did this for 6.X, however I have searched around on Google and can't seem to find it.  Although perhaps this is due to me asking Google the wrong way  :)

I like to keep records of which PC was last to login to the server.  E.G.

Last login 01 october 1984 from rmclay_laptop.mydomain.co.uk

or something to that effect.

Cheers,
Robert

DHCP to DNS synchroniser

Ensures the DNS service reflects the names and IPs allocated by DHCP, as well as all statically allocated local IPs (eliminates the "pc-00001" problem). Also allows Cnames to be used to direct sub-domain names to other sites.

tried it once on 7...no go.

maybe contact author.
