This project sounds pretty interesting but I am somewhat of a n00bie to this side of technology. (Teleco Stuff of course I have "unlocked" many PAP2's for people )

I've been using SME for years and have helped set them up personally and for friends and businesses.

My latest frustration is the stability with my VoIP companies. The same way I got tired of dealing with webhosting/email places and decided to do it myself with SME server back in the day, I wonder if this project is a solution to do the same with my own VoIP?

Before I ask all the different questions I am pondering I want to make sure I am going down the right path with considering setting this up as a solution....

The stability of VoIP companies will always be a problem.

Using Sail will not help you there ... as far as I know you won't be a VoIP provider with Sail software ... you still have to use a Voip company.

You can however setup extensions out of office so to speak ... I have an extension setup here at work that directly auths with my home ... so it's as if I were at home.

The question you have to ask yourself is ... am I happy with my current VoIP hardware or do I want extra functionality ... Sail is a PABX ... which I'm sure you have realized already.

Regards,

Tib

Humm ok so to get this box running what do I need? Can someone break it down simply, I've been reading around on the net but the diversity of this project seems to blur answering the more simple question.

-I have a box that I load SME on with the SAIL software.....
-I assume I need either need some analog line or VoIP or something feeding to it, but how?

You can set up the popular voip lines in server-manager, under the "Trunks" heading. I use Telasip for my incoming calls DiD and voipdiscount for my out going calls plus I have a UK DiD for my friends over there to call me on. If you want to add a analogue trunk (such as BellSouth or BT) you will need either a SPA3000 or a PCI card from someone like Digium, I have not used these cards, but I am sure someone here will tell you the best ones. You can read all about setting up trunks in the docs provided by Selintra that can be found here: http://www.selintra.com/docs/cgi-bin/view Of course you will also need at least 1 extension to make calls from, this can be a IP phone, a PAP2 or a softphone like X-Lite, these again are set up in the server-manager under "Extensions".

OK ... this is a good place to start ...
http://www.selintra.com/docs/cgi-bin/view/Main/WebHome

Do a bit of reading up on how to setup the system etc.

Then go here ....
http://www.selintra.com/docs/cgi-bin/view/Main/DownLoadPages

You need to download the Asterisk rpms and the Selintra Sail rpm.

In short:

After you have loaded the software go into your server-manager and find the SAIL PBX section.

Setup your Globals section.

Then setup your trunk lines .... Click on New Trunk and there is a drop down where you can select one of the pre-done trunks.

If you want an outside line you either need an SPA3000 or a PCI card ..... I have an SPA3000 and works well.

The docs have all the answers you may need to setup the SPA3000.

Once the Trunks are setup you need to setup the Extensions ... either phones or soft phones

You can now setup your Routes ... Rules for what Trunks they use etc.

These steps will get you going for a standard fast setup ... the rest you will have to play around with if you want queues, messages etc.

Do a bit of reading first to get familiar with the interface etc.

Also do searches on here .... there are a lot of answers on setups etc.

Regards,

Tib
