Topic: Second SME Server with HylaFAX

My turn for a question  ...

Because of the location of our telephone point, I've worked out the cheapest option would be to grab a spare box and set that box up to be a dedicated fax box running sme7.2, wondering if any others have this set up and managing to use the main email server to send via dedicated fax box...it's late here if I'm not making any sense I'll rephase the question in the morning

I'll take a shot at it. If I understand you correctly you have 2 sme servers and one of them is running Halifax software but you need the main server to send email to the people that are receiving the faxes? The server that is running Halifax controls the email and the pdf that goes to the person that the fax is intended for. I guess you could have the 2nd sme server dial out and forward the email to the intended person getting the fax or just forward it over the internet if that connection is available. Would require a dial-up account unless you could relay it to the other SME server.

If you have a spare telephone line and a modem you could make it work as described. I hope I got the question right.

Thanks I have one server at the moment being our mailserver/fileserver/etc. but looking to get a second server to install HylaFAX and position the box near the phone line.

Configured as server only.  DHCP etc is turned off and the server has a fixed internal IP. This server has the modem attached and joins to the telephone line. The Hylafax printer on the client points to the "second" (fax) server and thats about it.

In my situation, they are on oposite sides of the room and connected to the same network switch.

Its all very transparent and took about an hour to set up..

Like mine but main server is upstairs and the proposed HylaFAX server is downstairs.

No I dont have a quick guide sorry. I could possibly put one together in the next day or two but it is so straight forward.

I followed the Guide in the Wiki to setup Hylafax and had to add users manually to the second server because of the lack of LDAP synching. For a handful of users that was no great hardship.

Follow the SME prompts to setup server-only, assign it an unused IP on your internal network, for gateway IP, set it to your main server.....This should get you well started

Will get the rest of the settings and post back. (Its getting late and I have had some very long days...if you get my drift)

Byte, here is the quick howto:


Main SME is 192.168.2.20
Setup SME as Server only
Unique name in localdomain eg  faxserver.localdomain
Fixed IP on local network (eg 192.168.2.10)
Gateway to Main SME Server (eg 192.168.2.20)
DNS to Main SME Server (eg 192.168.2.20)

Install Hylafax Contrib from Dungog as per the instructions

Add users to fax server with same password as they have on main server

In email setup/reception enter the IP of your main SME Server (192.168.2.20)
In Email under Delegate Mail, enter IP of the main SME server (192.168.2.20)

I use the Frogfax printer Client, NOT email, and set it up to point to the FAX server. If you use email, I guess you will have to deliver all your email to the fax server rather than the main server and that could get messy - I havent tried it. Maybe you want to and post back the results.

Notes:
I think this is all I did and it works flawlessly for 6 users
Not sure about the DNS Setting above – it hasn’t given me any grief
Not sure if that email reception setting is necessary either.
Also remove unnecessary hostnames from the fax server.

This should be more than enough to get you started. Just tweak things as necessary and post back if you get stuck and I will refer to what I have setup.
