SME Server 7.2 hangs randomly when using dar2 or copying large amounts of data

I have been fighting this problem for 2 months already. This is my 5th SME Server in the field and by far the most troublesome.

I have not been able to get a full backup since I installed the server 2 months ago. The system needs to backup about 58000 files totalling 39 gigs. Sizes range from 60k to 3megs. I installed dar2 to do the backups. The system normally hangs between 35% and 70% complete, and never in the same place. It then needs to be hard-rebooted. I cannot even copy the files off to another drive without the system hanging and needing a reboot. It was originally running on an Intel Xeon server, and the logs mentioned bad sectors. So I replaced the suspect drive. No more sector errors, but it still hung. Then I managed to painstakingly copy most of the files onto a direct attached drive and then onto another makeshift server. I tried to backup the data on the temp server, but it hung again and complained about ata errors. I then started to manullly copy the files onto a direct attached drive again, and now it hangs for no reason and needs to be hard rebooted once again. On top of it all, I cannot find a tool to check for damaged files and skip them when copying. I am a big advocate for SME Server, but I am running out of excuses and options for my client. Any ideas?

I loaded it right after byte asked me to. I also attached the dmesg log in bugzilla that shows the ata errors. Bugzilla hyperlink:
