Joining SME domain from IPCop network
« on: October 25, 2007, 11:48:09 AM »
Did plenty of searches but couldn't resolve my problem.

Situation: Two networks - one behind SME (using IP 192.168.10.x) meant for students, and one behind IPCop (using IP 192.168.1.x) meant for teachers. WinXP clients on SME network have no problem joining the PDC on SME but clients on IPCop network cannot. IPCop connects to SME box on 192.168.1.2. The local network on SME connects thru 192.168.10.1

Purpose: Clients on both networks should be able to access the shared folders residing on each other's networks. Separated into 2 networks mainly to restrict easier access to teachers' computers from students network.

Tried: 1. Applied XP reg file mentioned somewhere in the forum.
         2. Added remote access in SME as network 192.168.1.0 through router 192.168.1.2

I have no idea what gives ... have been breaking my head for past 2 days. :( Any help from kind soul would be greatly appreciated.  :-)

I think you should add the whole IPcop network as local network (192.168.1.x).
This is done on web admin pages.

Being on local network will allow them to connect to SME network (192.168.10.x).

Could you try this ?

Thanks

Thanks, Jader. Already added whole IPCop network (192.168.1.x) as local network in SME configuration but that didn't help. Adding from web admin page does nothing (read somewhere that it may be a bug). I had to manually configure to add it as local network. On this page, SME network (192.168.10.x) is shown as default local network.

Is there is a way to let IPCop network clients see PDC on the SME server? DNS resolution issue??

Shed some light on this.

Yes it's name resolution. IPCop / Smoothwall are only going to pass IP and not names. You can try adding SME PDC as the DNS but I doubt that will work. Maybe adding some SME detail locally to the hosts file at each XP machine on the IP Cop network would work? I know that I can get to resources on about 16 SME networks via Smoothwall IPSec VPN tunnels, but it's all IP addresses and no host names. For the few users that used to use an old MS SQL2000 app, I had to add the host name locally at the desks that ran the apps. You could also look an ADD ROUTE statement on the XP machines?

Let us know what you get to work...

Adding SME PDC as the primary DNS does not work!

How do you modify the local hosts file on the XP machine or adding ADD ROUTE statement? Any pointer to that would be appreciated.

Thanks.

shaolinmonk,

The hosts file can be found in c:\windows\system32\drivers\etc.

You can modify the file with word pad. Check the Microsoft knowledgebase before attempting an ADD ROUTE. Make certain that you have a good understanding of what you want before using ADD ROUTE. I would start with the hosts file modification - make a backup of hosts before you modify the file.

As the chap who started SmoothWall and the conventions in both the SW/IPcop network routing architecture I apologise :) However it's secure for a reason too.

I've run out of options now.
- Editing hosts file on IPCop clients don't work either.
- Tried modifying smb.conf file with host allow option didn't help.
- Tried adding WINS server in XP client.

Help from any one with similar experiences will be greatly appreciated. My aim is to allow students to view shared resources through Windows network places, without having to resort to any other cryptic confusing methods to access shared resources.
