Topic: file version

I will give the file server a try, but;
Is there any way to create file versions (like VAX VMS )in the server
so that you open a data file, change it saving it with a new version these are low level SQL requests but I need to keep track of them

choice.txt;1
choice.txt;2
choice.txt;3

THE EASY ANSWER IS when you exit the editor do a "save as" but I figure the  computer should be smart enough to keep track of my file names.

any thoughts on this?
