Squid Delay Pools on Class A Network
« on: November 02, 2007, 03:56:09 PM »
Folks -

I realize that this might be a question better left to the squid mailing lists, but I know you guys might know the answer to this, and it is on an SME server.

I work at a public library. We use an SME server (7.2) as our public proxy. I have installed the dansguardian contrib and it performs great.

I would like to implement squid delay pools to accomplish a little throttling of the kiddies who come in after school and completely clobber our bandwidth in the afternoon. I would like to kill the folks who came up with youtube and myspace!

Anyway, we have 4 departments with public internet access computers. The public network is 10.0.0.0/8. I have made department one computers IP addresses 10.1.0.X, department 2 10.2.0.X, and so on. I did this only to make VNC easier for my boss and I.

My question is: can delay pools work on a class A network like I have set up here, or do I need to redo my IP scheme first? If I were to use a 24-bit netmask on this network and still use the same IP's, could SME still hand out DHCP for the 4 networks? Right now, I have a template fragment that sets the IP's on each public computer. I would rather not set the IP's at the machines if I can help it.

Thanks -

Mark

You would be best to ask such a question on a squid specific forum or mailing list.

SME server has no DHCP support for anything other than a single network.

Thanks, Charlie - I guess.

It's been my observation that you rarely give any help for something that is not 100%, totally SME related. Next time, please let some one else try before you shut me down. I'm tired of it.

And, yes - I DO contribute money to this project.
