7.2 backup server hangs
« on: November 06, 2007, 08:01:05 PM »
Hope this is the right forum to post this in...

I have a 7.2 box (fully updated as of yesterday) whose only function is to run as an Affa backup server for my SME mail server.  It ran beautifully for about 4 months, then suddenly on Oct 27th, it began hanging daily at 02:59:03 AM.  The only recovery option is a cold boot as the system is completely unresponsive.

The only entry in the messages log other than that which is generated by the Affa process is:

Code: [Select]
Oct 27 02:59:03 archive squid[4218]: storeDirWriteCleanLogs: Starting...
Oct 27 02:59:03 archive squid[4218]:   Finished.  Wrote 0 entries.
Oct 27 02:59:03 archive squid[4218]:   Took 0.0 seconds (   0.0 entries/sec).
Oct 27 02:59:03 archive squid[4218]: logfileRotate: /var/log/squid/store.log
Oct 27 02:59:03 archive squid[4218]: logfileRotate: /var/log/squid/access.log

I have no idea where to look to start diagnosing this.  squid/store.log and squid/access.log are empty as again this machine's sole function is run as an Affa backup server, backing up about 9GB of email once each day.

Any help would be very much appreciated.

You might look at the files in /etc/cron.d and in /etc/cron.daily to see what is scheduled to happen at that time.

You could turn *off* the transparent proxy to see if that makes a difference.

If you haven't updated recently I'd recommend getting all the latest updates.

I had problems on a system that had 'snort' installed - its log files used to grow forever and eventually lock up the system with log file maintenance (a problem fixed in a later release).

There were reports of problems with 'Sme7Admin' causing apparent lock-ups when calculating disk space.

If you change the time &/or time zone by 12 hours does it freeze up at 3pm when you're awake to look at what's up?
