gateway configuring
« on: November 08, 2007, 02:59:02 AM »
Setting up my server is proving to be quite a challenge.

For some reason I can not get internet connection in server gateway mode.

Have tried to configure in many different ways but with no success.

Have server box 1st nic card connected to router but there does not seem to be a way to configure a gateway address for the router.

Trying to use dyndns.org for dns but when i try to check the dyndns.org site it changes to dyndns.com

Not sure if this is the problem because dyndns.com script is not supposed to work.

Somewhat confusing is that when I try to admin from remote computer using a browser it changes my domain name to a .com and i am unable to log in over teh network.

I can still log in as admin to the box but cant figure out the correct configuration.

have chosen to use DCHP and network identification but does not work. Have also tried login and PPPoE.

my connection for the router uses PPPoA?

Have 2nd nic set up with internal LAN to a switch but have not got to configuring this stage yet because there is no internet connection.

can anyone point me to some other instructions because I have followed the administration guide and am now really confused.

if your using a router as your modem then you will need to configure nic 1 to use that, and enter a valid ip, subnet and gateway ip. Assuming your using the router in nat mode. You should only be setting pppoa etc if your using a modem in the sme box?

have been advised to use the router in bridged mode.

have attempted this but with no dice - still no internet.

is there another post or how to about setting up the server/ gateway using the router in bridged mode with a dhcp dns with a PPPoA?

also - will the server/ gateway mode work if the router is set to use PPPoA?

becuase otherwise i have to keep stuffing around with the modem and am unable to use the internet while the server does not work!

I run my sme on router and i disabled NAT
I have 8 static IP's but the router takes 1, and my sme takes another

In SME its set to use its static IP and Subnet provided by my ISP, and the gateway is the ip of the modem/router.

If you dont have a block of statics i would personally just pick an ip in the 10.0.0.x range for the SME, and set the router to port forward everything to my SME box and use the protection of SME that i trust far more than my £60 router. Maybe use DMZ if your router supports it. That way your external IP will be that of the router.

Thats how id do it, how right it is etc im not sure.

enchesss ->

I have an identical adsl connection like that the one you describe - a pppoa adsl modem modem running in bridge mode, with a SME 7.2 gateway behind that. I rceive the external ip dynamiccally from my isp and I run a periodically cronjob to keep a dyndns dns server updated. I also have the selintra iptelephony server installed on the SME 7.2 gateway, and I rally feel I got a lot out of a cheap solution and a cheap adsl line.

It's a bit time since I sat up the ADSL modem, that used to be a router, but that is now a bridge, but I will try to remember ..

I think I first devided the "project" into two parts: 1. The problems related to the SME gateway. 2. The problems related to the adsl router/bridge/modem.

I think I started with the adsl modem. First I just disconnected the SME server and connected a Windows workstation directely to the adsl modem to make the bridging working in such a way that it would deliver the external ip directly into the Windows workstation.

This apeared not to be to easy. After a lot of thesting I had to give up my forst adsl modem and buy myself another one. The second one I think is a Billion Bipac 5102s (An old modell just now.). Also in this case I had to do some mailing to the Billion factory to get a "special firmware" to make the proper bridge mode possible. After upgrading the firmware to the ADSL modem no 2 I was then able to receive the external ip to the Windows workstation.

At this point it was just to plug in the SME 7.2 gateway and a switch over, and everything was just working fine.

I think that the task of making a adsl ppoa modem to work properly in bridge mode has little to do with the SME box itself, but it has a lot to do with the type and brand of the adsl modem. If I should do it again I would use the trick to make it work from a Windows workstation first, before I would try to connect in the SME 7.2 gateway.

Of cource one should be avare of that the Windows workstation will be exposed for a major treat when it is connected directly to the net, for the mentioned testing reasons. Firewalls etc has to be applied as required.

It took a few workhours to make it all working, but it works really good when it first work. (The main reason for doing this for me was to have the Asterisk iptelephony server connected directly to the net via the external ip, without the need of paying extra for such a service.)

I think I worked 2 monts or something on this "bridge mode problem", but none of these problem apeared to be related to the SME gateway. It was all related to the brand, model, firmwarestatus and configuration of the adsl modem.

Ok thanks.

Have tried as you said and i had to reinstall windows because even just having it on the net as bridged for like a minute - it started to act weird like a virus had effected my mouse and also made it run really slow as if there were several other programs running in the background.

So as you see - I am not keen to do that again. Also the modem needs to be rebooted and it gets locked up - also could be a virus for the modem?

So the best solution would be to have the server running behind the router firewall as well while it is connected with pppoa. At least I can use both the server and local network safely while setting it up. I can also use the other computer safely while connected to the net to read admin manual and search for hints on the forum.

But I have tried this without success.

Again if anyone knows of any how to's or guides to do this please let me know.

Cheers
