SME 7.2 has no Internet connection
« on: November 13, 2007, 05:15:37 PM »
Hi, i have SME7.2 with ADSL connection to the internet.  My SME-server has two LAN-cards. One for the internal network where i have three XP-machines and another LAN card which is connected to the ADSL Modem.

While the XP machines have internetconnection through the SME-server, the second LAN-card to the ADSL modem i have no connection from the SME server itself:
In the server console there is a topic to test the internet connection and this does not work - it says there is a problem during internet test. This is also the problem why i cannot update my SME-server with the server browser administration.

Can somebody help? Why do i have internet connection from all of the SME clients but no connection from the SME server itself?

Is the ADSL modem only connected to your SME server? Not on a switch with the other WInXP machines?

Do the gateway settings on your WinXP clients point to your SME server?

When you type ifconfig when logged in as root, is there a ppp0 connection present?

Reason I ask is becuase I want to make sure the XP machines aren't bypassing the SME server.

Hi,here is the answer to your questions.

1. The ADSL modem is only connected to the server and nowhere else.
2. The gateway settings on my XP point to the SME server.
3. When i type ifconfig as root there is no PPP0 connection present on the SME-server, only eth0, eth1 and lo.

And this is my SME configuration:

external segment:
eth1.............10.0.0.100
adsl modem....10.0.0.138

internal segment:
eth0..............192.168.0.1 (sme-server)
SME server is configed as DHCP server
SME server is configured as DNS-server

ipconfig on my XP machine shows:
IP-Adress.............192.168.0.20
Standardgateway...192.168.0.1
DHCP-Server.........192.168.0.1
DNS-Server..........192.168.0.1

What do you mean with XP-machine is bypassing the SME server - i did not read in the manual that this is possible. But this not what i want anyway.
And i found out something else. When i deactivate my anyvirus programm and the firewall on the XP-machine i get a lot of viruses when i enter the internet. Does this mean i am bypassing the SME-Server with its antivirus features?

What should i do - thanks you very much.

Hi,here is the answer to your questions.

1. The ADSL modem is only connected to the server and nowhere else.
2. The gateway settings on my XP point to the SME server.

Both those are as they should be.

You should not expect to see a ppp0 connection if your modem is configured as a router (as it appears to be, since it has an IP address).

What do you see when you log in as root on the console (or via putty), and type:

ifconfig eth1
ethtool eth1
route -n

?

What does this mean?

That means that the connection from SME server to your router is working fine.

But wait - you said "Why do i have internet connection from all of the SME clients but no connection from the SME server itself?". That's not possible. What exactly makes you think your SME server doesn't have an Internet connection? You mention the internet connection test, but what else? What do you see if you do:

host www.contribs.org

on the server?

Hi,

the command "host www.contribs.org" under root shows:
;;connection timed out; no servers could be reached"

And when i execute point 3 in the admin console for testing the internet connection  i takes a few seconds an the i also get the error message that the internet connection failed.

But from all of my XP maschines in the internal LAN i have connection to the internet.

What should i do next?

on the XP machines, does running tracert on the command line show the computers accessing the net via your server?

Hi, the tracert command on the XP machines shows that the XP machine ist accessing the internet via the SME server - so this seems to be ok.
But the problem still exists: I have no access to the internet from the SME server console - see the statements above.
What should i do next because without access to the internet from the SME server i cannot update my SME server.

Hi, i have to make a change to my statement above:

When i make "tracert 10.0.0.138 (what is my ADSL modem)" i see that the route goes via the sme server. But when i make "tracert www.yahoo.com" i don't see that the route is going via the sme server.

what does this mean?

This means that your workstations do not access the internet via your SME Server, but somehow find a way around it to connect the internet. Is your SME Server the only system connected to your router? Are you sure you connected the cables from you router and your lan to the correct network card? Do you have manually edited host files on your XP clients?

Normally the layout/wiring diagram should be something like this:

Code: [Select]
INTERNET --- ROUTER -------- SME Server -------- SWITCH(/HUB) --- LAN
           10.0.0.138  10.0.0.100 / 192.168.0.1  192.168.0.x
or if you would only have one client you could loose the switch/hub and it would look something like this:

Code: [Select]
INTERNET --- ROUTER -------- SME Server ----------- Client
           10.0.0.138  10.0.0.100 / 192.168.0.1   192.168.0.x

I'm getting slightly confused...

???
------------------------------------------------------------
Anyway, sorry if this is a pain, but earlier you said when you typed ifconfig, ppp0 wasn't listed.  When you set up the settings when you first ran SME, how did you set your internet connection?  Did you use PPPoE?
------------------------------------------------------------
Since I don't know how experienced a user you are I'm just gonna list some standard things to do that might get you up and running...

make sure your server is configured as something with 'gateway' in the name :P eg, Server and Gateway, Private Server and Gateway etc. (that is if you want the xp machines to access the net via your server--which I'm not really sure if you're saying you do or you don't)

make sure your server is configured to access the internet via PPPoE if you are using an ADSL connection (login to the server as admin, on the server console that comes up it should be option 2--configure this server {look for External Interface Configuration})

make sure your ADSL modem is set to bridge mode

make sure your layout/wiring looks something like cactus' diagrams

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Hopefully that will help, but if you could, please post exactly the results of those tracert tests that were on the XP machines.

Cheers,   :-)
