Adding Groupoffice on top of standard SME email
« on: November 16, 2007, 04:46:46 PM »
I don't have a machine handy to test this on and haven't had luck with virtual stuff yet so I searched the forums and google...

Has anyone added the GroupOffice contrib onto a system that's been running standard SME email services with Horde? I've got 20 or so users with plenty of email in IMAP boxes that I can't lose but have been eying GroupOffice for a while now.

Is it a seamless step up? Anyone care to share a howto on it?

Also, if there are plans to integrate GroupOffice into the actual released version of SME8 I would probably hold off since at that point in time I will likely have new hardware for the switch anyhow.

Thanks,
E

Love groupoffice, I recommend it highly, but be for warned that getting technical help may be a little slow. I have a customer with 147 end users using it instead of outlook. Flexibility is great and easy to use. There are some minor glitches I have found. But nothing major.

Another quick Q on this one...

Will it overtake the Horde frontend that's out there? I ask because it would be an abrupt switch that my road warriors wouldn't likely appreciate. If they can't run together for a time then I might need to setup groupoffice later on the newer machine and get people trained on it before the switch.

Thanks for the comments - looking forward to this definite upgrade.

No; Horde just like roundcube, GroupOffice, egroupware and others make use of IMAP, so everything remains on the server. You can run all of them at the same time and users can make their own choices to what they like better, and change back if they want.

ok, but how does the end user choose which mail system he wants to use? Even if eGroupware, Horde, GroupOffice, etc use IMAP, there can only be one daemon running at any given moment

All applications are still making use of this same daemon, in fact the same user can use diifferent applications at the same time.

ok, I'm a bit confused ....  :-?

Does the end user, or the sysadmin choose which IMAP service to use?

OK, this is not that hard!
The IMAP daemon (and other daemons too) can handle numerous concurrent connections. The application used is just a choice on how to access it, this could be thunderbird, evolution or outlook. Groupoffice and the other apps are just additions to make the system better (at least from the user's point of view)

sorry, I can see where we misunderstood each other.

If I have egroupware, Horde & groupoffice installed on the same system, I'm sure I can only ever use one of these programs at any given time, right? Or is there a way to run them simultaneously, thus allowing user1 to make use of features offered by groupoffice, and user2 using features from Horde.

This doesn't sound possible to me though, but that's what I understood from what you said.

You have to separate each thing out conceptually. The IMAP service simply answers IMAP requests. Thunderbird, Horde, Mom's IMAP Client, etc. all request mail from the IMAP Daemon.

I'm guessing that GroupOffice (like Horde) is another web client so it can be setup on a specific port or a subdirectory of the apache2 server.
