Tape Space Advice
« on: December 11, 2007, 11:30:18 AM »
I am getting 'out of space' errors as follows ;

buffer (writer): write of data failed: No space left on device
bytes to write=32768, bytes written=-1, total written   16818464K

however the drive is a HP Storage Works DAT72 [34 Native]
and the tapes are ;

HP DDS-4 data cartridge C5718A  40GB

Any advice please ?

Thanks !

I have had another look at this and suspect that in fact it is not the tape that is out of space.

flaxbackup.conf shows that fb uses /tmp for temporary work however a df -h doesnt show that as being low on space ?

I am wondering then if it is to do with the max amount of allowed files in a backup?

There is about 16GB in total but there are thousands of small files...

I am increasing buffer from 20 to 40 to see what effect this has ...

Hi Graham. I'd suggest that you try it with buffer disabled. That might be slower, but will simplify the pipeline used. If the tape size is the problem, then dd would report the error, rather than buffer.
