Topic: SME8 and Via C3 uP?

Hi,

I'm reading comments that the next release of SME( will not support the Via C3 uP which i belive is because its a i586!? Is this ture?

If so what is the new min spec we and other Via chip people going to have to upgread to?

This is because CENTOS 5.x will not be supporting i586 which SME Server is based on.

Hi,

I know that CentOS 5.x is dropping support - my question is what uP's are supported and is the VIA C3 supported / been tested?

Having looked are more web sties (and the VIA site did not help) I see from Wikipedia that the VIA C3 is unofficially classed as a i686!?

It would be helpfully if I could be pointed at some clear information that confirms one way or the other if the VIA C3 is supported.

As There has not been a reply to my post.... I have another question on same issue....

CentOS website says that there is a i386 or a x86_64 version of 5.1 - so following the comments that i586 will be dropped - this statement on the CentOS site is only adding to my confusion.

Does this mean that for what ever reason the SME development is following the x86_64 route, which to me says that more than just i586 support is being dropped.

I've contacted CentOS and await feedback - but some feedback from the SME team would be great.

There are actually 3 different C3 CPU's!

I have two Via boards with C3 CPU on. One of them needs the i586 switch when installing SME7 on it, and runs the i586 kernel, so i will asume it will not be able to run SME8.
If i run "dmesg" on the command line it tels me the cpu is: CPU: Centaur VIA Samuel 2 stepping 03

The other one installs normal without any switch and runs the i686 kernel, so i believe it will also run SME8.
"dmesg" on that tells me the CPU is: CPU: Centaur VIA Nehemiah stepping 05

I guess this is good news as you have suggest this is a i686 chip. 

However I have decided not to leave things to chance and will be setting up a hard drive this week and pulling in SME8 onto it just to check - I like others that I know have C3 chips are not really looking forward to changing motherboards, especially as we have units pulling ~20watts.

Maybe I'll go hit the Donate button after all!

Are there any other methods of installing SME8? an ISO or something maybe?

I'm willing to report back in detail any finding....

Since SME is build on top of CentOS, you should be able to check if it works by installing CentOS 5 (wich dropped support for i586). I wont guarantee that if CentOS 5 works with your stepping, that it will work with SME 8, but it would be logical if it did (well at least to me).

You are advised not to upgrade as this process is not tested, nor outlined.

Another i586

CPU: Centaur VIA Ezra stepping 0A

Tryed to install SME8 into a new HDD... do not start... after load vmlinuz it reboot.
So tryed to install SME7.3 without any parameter (i686 kernel): do not go = same issue.
Finally tryed to install SME7.3 with smei586 as option = install ok.

My installations was from 6.x or even older so I was not sure about to run or not in SME8.
Not my doubts are clear = do not run.

Just to let anyone know, my CPU is a VIA EPIA900 motherboard from a Falcon CR51 barebone.

SME 8 b1 installs fine on my VIA CL10000 With C3 Centaur VIA Nehemiah stepping 08.
It can also be upgraded from SME 7.3.
