Any way to get 4.x?
« on: March 04, 2000, 05:05:59 PM »
I'm getting familiar with 3.1 in order to install as our main server in 3-4 weeks, and I'm not sure if I should be even trying to use 3.1, since apparently 4.x is coming out soon.

I noticed messages from 4.x beta testers (I assume).  Since I'll likely be using 4.x instead of 3.1, is there any way to get the latest beta version?  I couldn't see any place to download it on the site.

Thanks in advance.

The beta version can be downloaded from:

ftp://ftp.e-smith.net/pub/e-smith/e-smith-4.0b5/

If you find any bugs, please report them to us!! So far there are no known bugs in this beta (but it's only been out for a few days).

Best regards,

Unfortunately, I couldn't get into the FTP site anonymously - sigh.

So In order to get SOMETHING, I used one of the HTTP sites from the download area.  But I only have a 56K modem, and I expect to be kicked off during the 15-20 hour download.  Because of this, I'm downloading 4.0b3 from one of the HTTP sites which allow me to use GetRight (which restarts if I drop the connection - IT SAVES ME!!!).

In any case, is there any MAJOR gotcha for 4.0b3?  I'm not really going to be doing any thing REAL with it - I'm only trying to get familiar with it.

Once 4.0 is released, I'll re-download.

So - any MAJOR problems with 4.0b3 that should prevent me from just checking it out?

Hi Steve,

I'm curious as to what the problem is. Is there a limit on the number of anonymous users, or is performance just slow? We're temporarily hosting our FTP site at a local ISP until we complete our move into office space and I'm curious to know how they're doing.

No major gotchas. Here is the list of recent fixes:

- updated ec59x, epic100, rtl8139, and tulip ethernet drivers to match the versions used in e-smith 3.1

- fixed i-bays to reset owner/permissions properly when modified

- fixed owner/permissions on print spool directories for LPRng

- fixed config files to correctly handle netmask of 255.255.255.255 for additional local networks

- for anonymous ftp allow login as "ftp" as well as "anonymous"

- fixed Apache config file to allow CGI scripts to work correctly in i-bays

- modified e-smith console to allow user to select whether DHCP client sends its system name or ethernet address as the client identifier

Makes sense. Please let us know if you find any new bugs!

Modem dialup control doesn't work properly in 4.0b3. Nor does printing.

What I suggest that you do is to install 4.0b3, then
install some upgrade RPMs from  ftp://www.e-smith.net/pub/e-smith/dev/e-smith-4.0b5/RPMS/ -
grab the e-smith RPMs, and diald, and LPRng if 4.0b3 doesn't have it (I forget), and you will be close enough to 4.0b5 for it
not to matter.
