and the 'appear to me' to have CentOS side of the Software Installer.

My question is ... should they be installed against production servers as I have also read on these forums that some (if not all) updates all from the CentOS side can cause problems ... so as I say I'm looking for confirmation that these are 'safe' for installation against production servers.

Thanks.

The problem with the CentOS repositories have been fixed since 7.1 if I remember correctly so it should be save to upgrade from this repository as well. However if you are not running SME Server 7.2, you might be better of reading the update instructions in the wiki first: http://wiki.contribs.org/Updating_to_SME_7.2

Most *should* be safe *most* of the time.  This is a major set of updates and we have found a few issues with samba.  Unless you are aware of issues that need a newer package it might be worth waiting for 7.3 which will include all the listed updates as well as a few support packages from sme.

Is the advice to wait for 7.3 intended for 7.1 installations, or does it apply to 7.2 as well?

Also, is there an estimate of the date for the 7.3 release?

Thanks for the post. Good to hear the update was smooth for you.

The server in this case is a production box... I'll wait a bit longer to see what others may post.

I performed an update with these on 2 production servers. There was a small issue with samba (rebooting the windows clients fixed their "Unable to access USER folder" error) and one small problem with dar backup with the "printer admin" option which was fixed by hashing out the option in smb.conf.

Other than that it all seems to be working but I'll keep you updated.

Thank you all for your comments ... I updated my own production server with out issue but I just might wait for 7.3 before completing any update with customer production servers.

Cheers

Just to help close the loop for anyone watching this thread, I installed the updates on 22 December and all went well.

Yesterday, the software update panel indicated a yum update available, so I accepted the update. This resulted in the "unending update" mentioned in another post. I followed the advice there to signal post upgrade and reboot, and that sorted it out. The server seems to be operating just fine today.

I have a couple of production servers to update and have been following this thread with some interest.

The update announcement for version 7.3 (Thanks for the hard work btw) leaves me wondering if the normal server-manager or yum update proceedure will also update the SME version to 7.3??

...And presumably take the CentOS updates listed above into account too??

Thanks in advance.

If the production machines are 7.2 you should be fine most of the times as stated by byte (one of the devs). If they are of 7.0/7.1 I guess you should follow the update instructions as described in the wiki to update to SME Server 7.2 (which then will probably take you straight to SME Server 7.3 as it should take latest available version of available packages)

If you really want to be sure than the best way is to download a SME Server 7.3 ISO, burn it on the CD and update the server form the CD.

...And presumably take the CentOS updates listed above into account too??
If you have all repositories enabled that should be by default they should be pulled in as well.

Anyway please report back what you did and how things turn out, so we can update the wiki accordingly if necessary.

Thank you for your response.  I carefully read your advice, gritted my teeth and charged ahead with a yum update.  Couldn't have gone smoother.

For the record both servers were running SME 7.2 prior to the upgrade.  I have kept the servers very much as SME standards without a bunch of mods, ect.  One is used primarily for file and email and the other is used to host a couple of web pages.  Both servers are fully backed up using DAR2 to USB hard drives.

Thanks.
