Topic: How to disable bonding?

I've just set up a simple SME install to be used as an internal server (not gataway), in a machine with a single embedded nic.  SME seems intent on setting the nic up as  bond0, and I see no obvious way to shut off bonding and just have a simple "eth0" setup.  As it is, the server cannot get to the Internet, and it is also inaccessible from the LAN.  So, how do I shut off bonding and simplify this setup?  (It also seems to me that you should be able to disable it during the install...)

SME Server does not set up by default NIC bonding, if you only have one network card installed then you will not have the option of choosing NIC bonding.  Also you have to have two of the same network cards installed if you was to use NIC bonding and even then when setting up the server the default option for NIC bonding is disabled.

If you still feel SME Server is not working out of the box then please report to our bug tracker giving us your full server history and hardware details. Thanks.

SME Server does not set up by default NIC bonding, if you only have one network card installed then you will not have the option of choosing NIC bonding. 

And yet that's exactly what happened.  Ifconfig shows only bond0 -- no eth0.  I recall seeing an option somewhere along the way (not sure whether that was during install or from the admin panel) for setting up bonding... and of course (since I have only the one nic) I elected to not use it.  It was activated anyway.  Since this is a new install, I'll try loading it again and make note of where (or if) I see the bonding option.  I will also take a hardware inventory and submit everything to the bug tracker.  Thanks for your feedback.

One more question: is there in fact a way to manually kill bonding and revert to a single nic setup via the command line?

so just change the setting to not select bonding (if it is not already set to that).

Thank you, Ray... that's exactly what I've done (again), and there was no opportunity for me to select/deselect bonding during the configure process.  I am able to set the IP address, the role of the server, etc, but nothing about bonding.  And then upon logging in as root, I see that bond0 still exists at IP address 1.1.1.1 (?) and no eth0 to be found.  I am more than willing to default to assuming human error, but this is looking more like a bug to me after having installed this twice.  At least I see nothing (documented, anyway) I could have done to prevent this from happening.

If you search on bonding, there was a suggestion to reconfigure to gateway mode in order to undo bonding, then reconfigure back to server only mode.

I did search the site for "bonding," and didn't find anything relevant.  If you could direct me to a link, I'd appreciate it.  As for your suggestion... it doesn't look like you can select gateway mode if you have only one nic installed.

I've tried again to setup an account on Bugzilla, but am still unable to sign up for some reason.  So for the moment, I am waiting for a staffer to read my email and provide me with the secret handshake to get me in.   

If CentOS/Ubuntu/FC8 work on this machine but SME won't, there's probably a bug in SME -- no insult intended, just observation.  SME looks like a potentially killer distro for my purposes, and I'd like to hang in and help you improve the product if you folks allow me.  In the meantime, I also need to get this server rolling soon and am resisting the temptation to punt this thing and load up CentOS.  I'm sure you all understand.

SME Server 7.3 is actually based on CentOS 4.6, what I'm finding strange is you physically only have one Network card installed yet ifconfig is showing bond0

I'm pretty sure that the bond0 is a red-herring, and the core of your problem is the missing eth0, and that would be because your NIC is not detected by and supported by the CentOS4/RHEL4 kernel. Please provide full details via the bug tracker - we're not making progress here. Thanks.
