mailserver over inmarsat ?
« on: January 14, 2008, 10:50:08 PM »
Hi All,

I like to use an sme 7.3 to act as a mailserver over inmarsat, the server is in server and gateway mode and directly connected to a inmarsat bgan-terminal. On the clientside i use windows-xp also connected to a bgan terminal. When i ping the sme-server there is a very high delay (2oooms). The pptp-vpn can be established but when i try to send a mail to the server i get a timeout-error.

Has anybody experience with sme over satellite ?

Should i try to tune the TCP parameters on sme and xp and how can i do it ?

Should i try to use the uucp-protokol and how can i do it ?

Hi,

Back in 1999, Charlie Brady and Gordon Rowell assisted CAA, and Australian NGO, set up a server in East Timor.  At the time, the only available comms into ET, was INMARSAT.  We opted to route email between our ET server, and our Australia HO server over UUCP.  Messages headers were paired down and the messages were then auto gzipped before being injected into the UUCP queue.  An internet connection is not required.  The remote server dials the HO server directly and the copies mail between the two servers.  Since all Inmarsat calls are charged at the same rate, why add the cost of an ISP into the mix.

UUCP turned out to be very efficient over the limited bandwidth available on Inmarsat, especially as the message were compressed going into the queue and automagically decompressed coming out of the queue.

There once was a UUCP contrib, but I couldn't find it when I looked for it recently.  Try contacting Charlie or Gordon.

Cheers
