Topic: folder by folder user authentication

I'd like to implement password protection on a folder by folder basis...as most of these folders are subfolders of others, the Ibays fall short of solving my problem.  I've been following Apache documentation to accomplish this, but e-smith's configuration seems to be stopping me.  Can anyone please help me understand how I can get .htaccess files working on the SMEserver?  I've been messing with the apache configuration file, but I cant figure out why it's not using any of my .htaccess files to authenticate!  Please help!  Thanks
