Configuration Failed
« on: January 21, 2008, 11:19:31 PM »
We had our intranet server go down Sunday morning . . . we were completely unaware of SME Server until now.  We've been able to look into some of the logs and after one thing led to another we were looking into the apache portion and when we try to look at the status we get the following (continuously loops)

Code: [Select]
$ service httpd status

Configuration Failed
[Mon Jan 21 16:18:30 2008] [crit] (28)No space left on device: mod_rewrite: could not create rewrite_log_lock

Any help & insight would be greatly appreciated!

While I'm generally supportive of the "RTFM" & "STFB" (Search The Fine Bugzilla) approach to answers on this forum, the original question indicates this organization was unaware they even HAD an SME Server, perhaps because it'd been set up ages ago, worked perfectly and had been largely forgotten as personnel turned over.  That's not an excuse, mind you, as documentation should have been in place ... but gee whiz, we don't have to be complete hard cases all the time, eh?

Here's the results of a quick search on "No space left on device"; maybe Bug 154 is the culprit?

We don't even know what version of the SME Server helpntb's organization is running!  Helpntb, are you using Server Manager or a shell?  If Server Manager, you should be able to see what version is running from the main status page.

Thanks much MSmith . . . You totally hit it on the head with all of your points!  Ages ago, turnover, and lack of documentation all apply in this case.  Due to time and personnel the documentation part is in no way my fault!  This was not a security issue, nor was I reporting a problem . . . hence, I thought the posting legitimate.  RayMitchell's post did eventually help, but until MSmith's response I wasn't coming back.

The fix . . . took all ssl out of the httpd.conf . . . this is only an Itranet that is home to very few apps with little access.  We don't/didn't use the Server Manager and the SME version in use/question is 7.1.

I take it you are insinuating the answer to "Search bugzilla" with a provided search results link was not a good one and a little terse.
Please read my further comments.

So you seem to have initially felt my answer was worthless.
I even provided a search results link that had 15 bugs listed in it.
Did you think that I had not answered you accurately, if so I suggest you realise the value in any answer that people give here, no matter how seemingly short in may appear.
I knew the answer was there as I remembered the situation described, but I'm busy and didn't feel it necessary to read through each bug report finding the exact one (or two) that applied in this case.

How long would that take you to read through and find the ones appropriate to your situation, which it seems you eventually did as the 2 bugs you say resolved your problem were listed in the search result.

Please treat the answer provided with more value, I'm busy, I steered you in the right direction, I even bothered to do the search for you, how much hand holding do people expect to get for free in this place.

We are all busy... Thank you both for your help!!!  I do appreciate any response, and I did get to the answer . . . Your points are noted.

Just a thought... Would it be possible to include a 'search' that would include results from the forum, bugs, and any other repository of info (faq, howto, and etc.)?

Thanks to both of you,
ntbhelp

You should lodge that request at bugzilla as a New Feature Request (NFR), subject web site.

I followed the link RayMitchell left and while it was far from *worthless*, especially for someone new to SME it was most certainly terse.  As I said (and for what it's worth), I agree with the philosophy "Search Bugzilla first" but in this instance, where the original poster had been thrown into this situation without warning, knowledge or volition, I felt that it would be useful to expand on that search *AND* provide links that were *more obviously* on point.

This was not an instance like so many on the forums where someone of his or her own free will gets involved with SME Server and runs into trouble.  Nor was it one of the deplorably many instances where someone likes SME but would like it much more if it had the one feature he/she wants, then dismisses SME and the forums as useless when the "request" is met with less than wholehearted enthusiasm.

Rather, this was an instance where someone new to SME and to the community came in, looked around (and whether helpntb could or should have looked around more is open to debate), asked a question and got back a *correct* but cryptic answer.  So I decided to use what experience I have to a) expand a bit on RayMitchell's answer and b) try to draw the original poster back into the dialog.  Those who read this thread will have to be the judges of whether I was right and/or successful in doing so.

That all being said, I'm grateful that the developers and those most intimately familiar with SME Server choose to give of their time on these forums AT ALL, because as Charlie Brady has pointed out, SME is a gift to us all and no one is under any obligation whatsoever to respond to any question in these forums.

Did you add custom templates to remove the ssl stuff from httpd.conf ?

I believe the problem you experienced has been **fixed** and is no longer evident in the current version (7.3).

Before the server goes back into the corner, to be forgotten again, I suggest you update to 7.3.

Simple steps, from the console...

[root@busted ~]# yum update dbus dbus-glib smeserver-support smeserver-yum yum yum-plugin-fastest-mirror python-sqlite
[root@busted ~]# signal-event post-upgrade; signal-event reboot
[root@busted ~]# yum update
[root@busted ~]# signal-event post-upgrade; signal-event reboot

opps...

is home to very few apps

Review these before you update.

At the moment you need to search the wiki, the forums and bugzilla separately.

Previously, there was a single sign on search facility but due to security issues it was replaced.

Have a look at www.centos.org for an example of how it worked.

We removed the ssl stuff from httpd.conf, and yes I did/do see that the later versions should fix our issue.  An upgrade is in the works.  The SME Server is operational now and I've been learning...  Thank you very much for the help!

We removed the ssl stuff from httpd.conf,

FYI, if you just edited /etc/httpd/conf/httpd.conf, at the next reconfiguration, the 'ssl stuff' will return.

[root@tiger ~]# head /etc/httpd/conf/httpd.conf
