VMWare on SME ?
« on: April 11, 2002, 09:09:48 PM »
Hey Folks,

I've been using SME for quite some time now for use a small user community (15 users). I'm using it fully (firewall, filesharing, web, mail, backup, domain controller, print server, ...) and I'm quite satisfied with all of it's features.

Since it is a powerful new machine that belongs to me, I would like to use it for more then only this ... the thing I would like to do is running VMware on it. The pc I work normally on is a rather old one ...

So, I'm looking for comments on this:
- Has anyone installed VMWare on SME? Did you succeed? Is this possible?
- Do you see any problems installing it on SME?
- Why should I not do it?
- Any other comments?

Tnx already,
ProStar

I have not done it, but there's no reason that it isn't possible.  You'll need a lot of packages from Redhat 7.1, though (most of the X stuff, for instance).  The problem with this approach is that you're trying to use the SME server as both a server and a workstation, which will likely compromise its performance in both areas.

I actually forgot some very important details ... with VMWare I meant the new GSX server from them. It doesn't need a graphical environment cause every virtual machine is run from a remote machine (with graphical environment).

Sorry ...

I've done that some time ago. Remote console for GSX runs on windows NT or 2000, so your old computer might not handle it well :-(
I was using some packages from RedHat CDs to satisfy dependences, but its doable and wasn't too complicated.

One of the best ways I can see doing this is to have a Win2K host with the e-smith server running as a client. I know you want to load VMware on the E-Smith box but the fact that E-Smith doesn't have X-windows installed may be a whole other set of problems in itself. But what I was getting at is that you can use Win2K terminal services as your means of connecting to the server. Thus you could keep your old box but utilize the power of the new box.
