what do you use for the SME "homepage"?
« on: February 19, 2008, 12:56:13 PM »
I hope this is in the right place, as I don't know if it's really a contrib question.......

What do you use for the homepage of your SME server, if you have to access http://sme or http://192.168.0.1 (or whatever your SME name / IP is) from your webbrowser?

I'm looking for something simple & easy to use for an intranet site, where I can have a lot of bookmarks / links, and some general info / documented stuff, like a wiki. Joomla or Drupal is a bit overkill IMO for this, and MediaWiki almost needs a bit too much work for the average office staff to actually use.

So, I'd like to know what other people use?

I have not made the contribs.org homepage, but I'm using mediawiki .. and I think that the contribs.org home page has to be  ..

http://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/MediaWiki

It's rather easy to install, but a little bit difficult to back up, du to the use of a database, different upload directories.

.. Ofcourse it is possible to run it on a virtual server and backup all the server image ..

Does anybody eles know a good and practical way to backup mediawiki ??

.. or did I understand the question right .. ??

yep, you've misunderstood the question :)

I mean't your own SME installation, on your own LAN. What do you (not just you, everyone else as well) use as a homepage / startpage if someone on the LAN accesses the server via their browsers.

One thing that's important though, is to have it installed an the Primary iBay to make it easier to backup.

The Primary i-bay is no more or less difficult to backup than any other.

Yes, I know, but the iBays get's backed up, I'm not sure if /opt get's backed up, and since a lot of script install in /opt, I don't know if they get backed up as well.

Anyway, the reason for Primary iBay, is that when you open http://sme - then it loads whatever is in Primary iBay :)

If you mean "don't put your content in /opt", then that is what you should say :-)

You are right, /opt does not get backed up, and people shouldn't put content in /opt.

My Primary ibay homepage serve only LAN and no fancy stuff in there.. just links.
I use Kompozer to edit the index.html to keep it simple stupid and very fast to load
