Upgrade from 5.6 to 7.3 - success, unless something breaks
« on: March 10, 2008, 04:34:44 AM »
Dell Poweredge 600SC, four years old, installed with e-smith 5.6, two 80-gig drives, RAID 1.  Ran happily.  After four years I wanted to replace the hard drives and get all the fancy new features such as spam & virus filtration (machine has been using fetchmail happily, don't worry, it wasn't directly exposed to the Internet) and ... shadow copy!

Backed it up (updated daily server mirror using SyncBack & double-checked with Vice-Versa Free [oops, looks as though the latest versions aren't free]), took it out of service, updated the BIOS and verified that i could boot in RAID degraded mode from either hard drive.  Removed one & set aside, booted from 7.3 CD.  Anaconda complained that I was trying to upgrade from a version that's too old, so I tried it with a 6.0 CD; oddly enough that one wouldn't see the 5.6 install!  So I tried 7.3 again and it did upgrade but wasn't "right"; yum wouldn't update, there were items I'd expected that I didn't see during the boot process, etc.

Per these instructions I did the "signal-event pre-backup" on the upgraded but "funky" 7.3 source drive, shut it down and put it aside.  Installed 7.3 fresh, then followed the instructions in UpgradeDisk and voila, everything came over just fine!

Ran all updates easily, set up mirroring to the other Seagate 320-gb drive (love those Barracuda 7200.10 series), added a couple of contribs and so far at least everything's running just great ... including shadow copies accessible from Windows Explorer on the client machines just as from Windows Server 2003!

MANY THANKS to all who have made the Wiki such a great resource, and a big tip of the hat to the developers who've given us this superb software.
