UUCP mail retrieval

UUCP mail retrieval

I have been asked to implement a Linux mail server at a school that has an ancient
Novell server running Pegasus mail (DOS based).
Below is an excerpt from their existing ISP as regards the format of the mail spool.

The SchoolNet EMail Service is a UUCP service. As opposed to the standard POP3 mail service which provides a single mailbox, UUCP provides multi-user email for an entire domain. This means UUCP sites are allocated a domain name, such as isilimela.wcape.school.za and can create as many user names as they like, each with a separate mailbox, for example abc@isilimela.wcape.school.za.
Because the service uses UUCP rather than POP3 or SMTP to handle multi-user email, it requires special UUCP software (over TCP/IP, TCP port 540).

Question :

Can a standard e-smith 4 mail server handle this, or would it require modification?
If so would one use the multi-drop option to retrieve the queue?

Have a look at http://www.caa.org.au/groups/IT/dili/ . There you
find a description of an e-smith system in use in Dili, East Timor, using dialup UUCP for mail transport.

You will need to modify e-smith 4 to support UUCP, but it is not especially difficult. If you can't work it out yourself there are some
e-smith experienced consultants in South Africa who should be able to help you.

No, you wouldn't use the multi-drop option, UUCP will handle the multiple users no problem.

Best wishes
