WinXP and Workgroups

Hi,

I've recently upgraded to WinXP from Win98SE and and everything seems to work except one thing.

My account that I used to logon to Win9SE with "exampleuser" use to access the ~home directory for that user on the e-smith server. This is no longer available with Windows XP ..

Can anyone help? I've read all the posts about domains but I'm unsure if that applies to me as I was simply using workgroups.

Regards,

BC.

Ben,

I'm a newbie to Linux but I would think that you would have to create a user on the XP box with the identical login/pwd as that on the server. This may allow you access to the ~home folder.

If that doesn't work (which I don't think it will if the server is also a domain controller) then you will need to create a user on the XP box with the same user/pwd and at the same time set it up as a member of the server's domain.

Hope that makes sense...

Cheers,
Greg

That was how my win98SE setup worked, and I tried to do the same with WinXP Pro but it cannot see the ~home folder. I know it isn't logging on as I've had to change the permissions on the linux box to let everyone have write access rather than a specific set of users in order to get access to files until I solve this problem.

Setting it up as a member of the server's domain sounds like what I may need to do .. which I'll have to look into .

Thanks for trying to help ..
.

In XP, go into the User Configuration panel and select yourself.
Up on the right hand side of the screen there's an option called "Manage Network Passwords" (or something similar). Within that option you can enter the SME user and password that you want to login as.

The only other thing to note is that I think you have to append the server name to the start of your username. eg. myserver/myname

I'll have to wander home and confirm the exact details at some point but the general idea works for me.

I see the option called "Manage Network Passwords", but I can't change or add anything although I'm logged in as administrator.
