SME Server 8?
« on: March 18, 2008, 12:57:25 AM »
I dosen't seem to be able to find anything on SME Server 8.
Is there somewhere you can follow the development of the SME Server 8.
Will there be at wishlist for the upcomming SME Server 8.

I have used SME distro for 8 years and it fits my temperament nicely - but there are room for improvement.
I would like a better integration for the LDAP and I would espacially like to get rid off Horde/IMP at have eGroupware integrated in SME Server 8 instead.

Anyway keep up the good work

SME 8 progress can be tracked via the wiki http://wiki.contribs.org/SME_Server_8 and the bug tracker http://bugs.contribs.org/show_bug.cgi?id=3640

No, SME has never had a "wish list", but you should know that by now if you have been using SME for 8 years.

1-Go over to the bug tracker and open a NFR (New Feature Request) for each item. (I think you will find some already concerning LDAP).
2-Roll up your sleeves and start punching out some code.
3-Post code to each NFR for testing and inclusion in the base.
4-When your code is perfected and to the devs liking, it will get included in the base.

Optionally, put up the funds and sponsor the development and have one of the devs do it.  This option can get fairly expensive.

Presto! new features/upgrades and functionality.

Sorry to inform you but this is not totally right - there were "wishlist" or request in some of the earlier versions!

Anyway a wishlist could be at tool for the good guys who i holding everything together in the next version. There will be good ideas and bad ideas but some of them will make the next version more usefull.

If I could punsh one code I would do that but this isn't one of mine skills.
So the best I can do which I already have is to give a donation and ask for some changes and hope that it will be consitured in the development.

There is a contrib for egroupware for sme7, so it's most likely when sme8 final is released that there will also be a contrib for sme8.
It's quite easy to install egroupware anyway straight from the tar.gz file, and even easier from the sme contrib rpm.
I doubt that such a full featured application will ever be integrated into sme, the policy is to have a good secure working base release and promote the use of well developed (& well behaved) add on contribs.

I'm already using this contrib but unfortunately there is some weakness in the integration between SME 7x and eGroupware.
My wish in this matter is that you can control users through LDAP (store all information usernames, password and rights etc.).
As it is now the binding between SME and eGroupware goes through IMAP and your not able to separate users from multiple domains. If you have at user called ex. sales and 3 domains ex. domain1, domain2 and domain3 then you suddenly have a mailaccount in all 3 domains like sales@domain1, sales@domain2 and sales@domain3. I think this i really bad and I hope this can be solved if LDAP controls all information's about users.

I'm fund of the simplisaty and stability of the SME. I also like to use a nice looking webmail-client but horde/IMP haven't realy got out of the '90 - if you look at there interface - scaring!

As previously advised you are best to submit this as a New Feature Request (NFR) to bugzilla, for consideration. Your NFR request won't get anywhere in these forums. Search bugzilla on LDAP as there are likely some requests along these lines already in the system.

That is the way sme is, and is not likely to change as there is only one nameset.
Email addresses can be "controlled" to some degree by using Pseudonyms, (see the Pseudonyms section in the manual) where you create pseudonyms like
sales@domain1 > john
sales@domain2 > mary
sales@domain3 > fred

I'm not sure that will resolve your LDAP issues though, as john@domain1, john@domain2 and john@domain3 are still valid, but in theory of no consequence.

Again, raise this as a bug/NFR re integration/improvement of LDAP.

I uess this is the bug you are looking for: bug 1543, although it will probably still create one username for all confgured domains.
