U3 in webshare
« on: March 24, 2008, 12:41:56 PM »
I was wondering, is there a way to use U3 (portable) software from within a webshare?
Being a consultant, I am always working on some organisation's computer and not able to install my preferred software.
For instance it would be nice to use portable apps software, but maybe some has found a way to make a sort of menu?

What an interrsting idea  :-)

I just made a small experiment. I copied over a Opera USB installation to a network share on the SME server. I tried to start it up from the network posistion and it did not work. It came up a error message from the OperaUSB start batch that it could not use network adresses.

I then just mapped over drive Z: over to the network posistion and then navigated into drive Z: The Opera USB installation then started over the net without a problem.

Does it has to be a U3 start menu, or can it be some other start menu ?

(I have never tried this before. I think it is just interesting to test it out.)

Correction - I think a webshare would be difficult, but a lan file server share could this be used ?

(Sorry I did not read the question well enough, I just thought the idea about running U3 alike things via lan sounded like something interresting.)

.. But what about mapping a drive via a VPN connection, could it work ?

Yes, I agree. Have just made a few tests on U3 and portableapps and the last one apears to be much more easy to "do things" with.

Tried portableapps allready in a webshare, that didn't work....
The trouble is that I can't make a VPN connection to my server from my client's network. It's simply forbidden.
I tried to use USB-sticks, but mostly they are also forbidden.

But why not only store a copy of a zipped portableapps file on some webserver and download it ? (Or download it fram the original site.) Takes approx 1 minute here at this place .. (Download compressed file and unpack at client.)
