Just change the IP of the SME server so that it is in your router's local network range.

Just change the IP of the SME server so that it is in your router's local network range.

the whole reason i couldnt connect before was because they were in the same range.. ill give it a go
see what happens. anyone els got any different ideas?

It sounds as if you have the SME server in server-gateway mode, with an unused local network. You should either get rid of the router and use the SME server in server-gateway mode, or set it to server-only mode, with both the router and your client machine on its local network.

It should be the oppisite, they should connect if they are in the same subnet and won't if they are not.

Why don't you post your network outlay including IP addresses, where the router is and how your DHCP is setup.

I suspect one of 2 things.

You are trying to run 2 DHCP servers and/or you are using your ISP's DNS server on the clients and they can't find the SME server.

If I were you, I would put everything on the same subnet, turn off the DHCP server in the router, use a static IP and turn DHCP on in the SME server and reboot your clients.

they are on the same subnet mask.., it is server-gateway with an unused sme local network, both client and server are connected fine to the internet and the site on the server can be viewed. the whole reason i dont want to use the local network of the SME server is because it creates lag when playing games as my connection isnt "man enough" as to speak.

having the set up i do, does my server see my client machine as an external client or and local.. i understand that because its not using the SME local network it wont be local but it is on a local network all the same..
if that makes sense to anyone.

this regardless it should be able to be ssh'ed all the same, right ?

Yes - the client is on the WAN connection of the SME server. Please see my earlier advice - and read the Users Guide at least twice.

That depends on the private/public setting.

You should be doing that primarily using the server manager. Let us know if that is a problem.

no, this is not a problem, just didn't start off doing it, the users i made were to run different programs on.
i might put 7.3 on and start again as the whole reason i got this server was to learn linux and sme
