Interested in VOIP on SME
« on: March 29, 2008, 06:22:58 AM »
This sounds like a very interesting project.  I friend and I have been looking at it for the past 2 days.

Our question is (after looking for an answer )

How do I install SAIL on my SME 7.3 server?

I am new to SAIL SME Server v8b6 and have been using SME for many years.
I have already done some research and only ask questions if I still can't work it out.

In the installation .... it talks about probing for a card of some sort.

Is it nessisarry to have this card or can I just us it as a server

If you plan on using any POTS (Plain Old Telephone Lines), BRI, PRI, etc. (eg. any type of "wired" phone lines) then it will require the correct hardware.

If you are only going to be using SIP/IAX then you won't need any hardware.  What is your plan for your setup?

I am also interested.  Is there a wiki page which briefly describes the features of VOIP and how well it integrates into SME's user base, maybe with some screenshots?  An overview would be great and I am sure would prompt more users to give it a try.

I don't see a direct link to the user base, but a server becomes an "integrated communication server" and you can also add ejabberd for presence service. Providing mail, phone, presence.

My first impressions after setting up 3 machines very recently with Sail:

With SME/Sail, the general knowledge needed to manage the system is concentrated on SME instead of being spreaded between 2 different OS.

The sound quality and speed are better than Trixbox (TB). The dialplan is leaner and easier to read. It's a good system to use and to see how asterisk works. Configuring phones is a lot more simple with Sail when there are many to manage.

Built-in options are fewer than TB but Sail stands out with options unavailable in TB like clusters (and class of service), and a more direct access to customize the dialplan.

Initial configuration is more difficult with Sail because of the way clusters, trunks and routes are organized. But maybe this is because I was used to FreePBX. Telephony is a "capricious" matter anyway.  At first, I made mistakes where I had no problem with TB. After these problems are gotten over with, some getting use to takes place... and to me, it is a well known SME-server, a system I thrust and respect.
