Super User account? Permissions Problem
« on: April 03, 2008, 07:58:53 PM »
i have a group of students who each have their own account and and can access their home directory through SMB.

i also have instructors who need access to all of the students home directories.

can this be setup using permissions? is there another method or different kind of account that allows this?

using single syllable words and instructions (I'm new to Linux) how can i do this?

thanks.

I guess from the sarcasm of the reply your are either justifiably tired of answering an often repeated question or you just had a really bad day.

your guess is right..

IMO 95% of questions are already answered here on the forums or by the howtos and FAQ..

but, that is, people simply keep coming here and asking.. :-)

Sarcasm is in the eye of the reader.
I asked a simple question that you decided to interpret as being sarcastic, that's your mindset not mine.

It is indeed a fact that many questions are answered already in the wiki, and had you done a proper search or read thoroughly, you would have found it. I was simply pointing that out to you for next time.

I in fact had a great day, I just got a new Core 2 Duo server with 3x500Gb drives and 2Gb RAM, and I created a nice website in Joomla too.

It would be interesting to have a poll that asks

1) which is the best way to post in a forum.

2) which is more likely to be perceived as sarcastic, sardonic

You may have missed this in your search of the Howtos, see if this is the solution your looking for

Select the right one you get the right results.

Select the wrong one you get the wrong results.

Life is that simple....

Reasons or Results

Reasons don't count....

When someone makes the wrong choice, they sometimes resort to blaming others
and by the that method they give up their power to change.

We don't need a poll for that, common sense and politeness should do! Ray is a well valued member on this forum and has helped a lot of people with pointers and instructions. Try not to shoot yourself in the foot by starting religious wars on interpretation or the tone of a message, just try and consider posts as being advice in the most positive way you can.

Now back to the topic of this thread please.

I agree with Cactus.
IMO the people no make the minimal effort for search a solution, and simple hit the click and post a new topic. WE made a lot of efforts to produce and create a good source of information like wiki, so why the people can't search?

I have a lema for those persons... "Think before click" or Search before click.

And who is making assumptions now?

And people do make honest mistakes. What is obvious to someone who lives and breathes on a forum, may not be so obvious to someone who is new. Unlike you I have not had the time to memorize the entire site yet.

by the way as a moderator should you not chastise yourself, call this thread "off topic" and close it by now?

I believe my coments are "on topic", so I'm going to reply. The tendency to say very little in your first post post and then chastise in later posts, is becoming somewhat common around here. If you ask questions in the "tone" of a rank beginner, then expect to be answered in that "tone", and please don't feel offended when the answer is below your actual level of knowledge. We have no way of knowing your knowledge level, other than what you say in your first post.

The reality here is that in your first post you did not advise that you had done any searching and that you could not find anything.

What you actually first posted was a plea from someone who sounded like they were a rank beginner, and someone who needed it all spelt out in simple step by step commands...
Quote
...is there another method or different kind of account that allows this?... using single syllable words and instructions (I'm new to Linux) how can i do this?...

So based on that scenario as presented by you, I felt it was appropriate to point out a common method of finding lots of answers on this wiki, which was to look at the Howtos.

You only advised that you had already searched in your second post, when you also accused me of being sarcastic.

So you don't like someone to make assumptions back at you, but you are happy to start making assumptions in the first place. A bit one sided don't you think ?

I don't understand why people get even slightly annoyed with someone who provides any answer for them ?
After all you did ask and I'm sure you were expecting an answer.
I don't get paid to answer you and you offend me back by criticising the style in which I answer.
I'm asking you to "grow up" too, and be a little more appreciative and thankful that somone you don't even know bothered to answer the question of a perfect stranger, and I'd ask everyone else who posts questions on this forum to also consider that.

if your first post had been phrased or positioned more like your last i would not have made any comment at all.

i was even willing to forget all about it. but the posts just kept on droning on and on.

the defensive tone of your last post does bring to mind the recent case of Hillary Clinton'S sniper comment and its aftermath though.
