I currently am running sme 7.1 as my gateway and PDC for an XP network. Since I need to upgrade the server as well, I have decided to just do a clean install of 7.3 to a new box. I am wanting to recreate everything manually (not using backups) on the new box just as it is configured on the old but was concerned about any issues I would have with the XP machines connecting to the new server when I replace it. How do I add the existing XP clients to the domain on the new server without having to create a new account on XP? or am I forced to have all of the users backup there personal info to there share.

Definitely not a good idea. If you don't move to a new hardware simply update. When moving to a new box use one of the standard backup/restore methods. I obviously recommend http://wiki.contribs.org/Moving_SME_to_new_Hardware
Doing so, you will avoid much trouble.

and justifiably so. With good knowledge about how samba works you can manage it, but I wouldn't do so without having specific reasons.

doing things in that way you'll have to re-join all clients to domain and copy all users' profiles

IMO not worth.
