hostnames and address
« on: April 14, 2008, 01:27:42 PM »
my isp configured DNS Server for my domain to my SME Server machine, but in server-manager I've got this message:

Code: [Select]
Operation status report
A DNS forwarder has been configured. This means that all DNS lookups will be handled by the DNS forwarder. Hostnames and addresses cannot be modified on this server while a DNS forwarder is configured.

what should I do?

I'm using SME Server 7.2

thx.

I am not sure what you mean by the above statement. Do you mean that you have an "A" record configured that points your registered domain name to your server? If so, the message you are seeing has nothing to do with that functionality. For information on Internet DNS and what it does see the appendix here:

http://wiki.contribs.org/SME_Server:Documentation:Administration_Manual:Appendix#Appendix_B._DNS

The DNS forwarder refers to how DNS lookups are handled on your local network. Its use is discussed in the manual here:

Are you sure you did not configure your server to forward DNS lookups to be handled by another DNS during installation? I suspect you have specified this and therefore SME Server is not able to add hostnames to the domain as this should be done at the DNS SME Server is pointing to.

in whois, if-unpas.org NS server is srv1.if-unpas.org (this is my SME Server machine), because I don't have access to control panel domain, I'm not sure whats wrong.

so, until now, I can't resolve my domain.

If you login to the server manager (as admin user) and review your server configuration using the option in the navigation bar on the left are the IP of your server and the IP of your DNS server the same or does it list your providers DNS IP number?

BTW I can see and access a website at the IP number listed under your hostname as well as on the mentioned hostname, but it is incredibly slow as well as pings having a high time.

in whois, if-unpas.org NS server is srv1.if-unpas.org (this is my SME Server machine) ...

SME server does not include software which publishes public DNS information. Your ISP or some other public DNS provider must to be used to publish domain records (i.e. to be listed in NS records for your domain).

Please be sure to read the Administration Manual carefully at least twice.

I don't understand why your domain is resolving from the www at all. (I do know that it is, although it is quite slow.)

You are correct that your server name is listed as the nameserver in Whois. You should go to Tucows domain registry pages and point the domain to an actual nameserver. You should then go into the nameserver's configuration and configure "A" and "MX" records that point to this server's static IP address. (I personally use zoneedit for this.) If you don't have control of the domain panel at Tucows you might speak to the contact listed on the Whois entry.

I don't think you will be able to get the domain to resolve locally in this setup as non of your "local networks" are truly "local" (on the same subnet) to the SME server.

I would be plenty nervous if my server was configured as server only with a webfacing address as yours seems to be. I would suggest that you put this behind a firewall with only needed ports forwarded or get it into server-gateway mode with 2 nics..............
