Mails repetition?
« on: April 22, 2008, 04:11:48 AM »
Since 8 months ago, I've been using SME server 7.1.3, since I installed it, I didn't have any problem, but two weeks ago I got a problem. The problem is that when users receive incoming mails, the mails arrived doubled or tripled but just some mails not all of them. In order to discard that is not O Look Express, I checked my email account by Web Mail and it happens the same with some emails.
I've also realized that in some accounts it takes long time the mail that I try to send in coming up, after more less 20 or 25 minutes the mail arrives to the recipient but that problem is not constant.
Can anyone tell me why this is happening?

G'day mate. This is sounding like a problem that I'm also seeing. I've posted a bug report here that you might want to take a look at.

The bugs team are still looking through the logs that I have uploaded, no fix yet.

I am running 7.3 with all updates and I'm still seeing the problem, although interestingly enough the time I started seeing the problem is similar to you. Perhaps there was something updated last month that changed email behavior? I have no doubt that the bugs team will be able to find a solution once they've been able to sort through the data, watch the bug report I guess.

This is the first mails server that i installed, it's the first time that i use Linux, since i installed the 7.1.3 version i haven't done any updates. This problem is just appeared two weeks ago, but i don't understand why this didn't happen before because i have 8 months with SME server.
if i reinstall again in a clean way from SME server 7.1.3, will it run as the first time?
what can u tell me about this to do?, because the users are angry for that problem

I'd argue that running the updates from the server-manager would be a good idea for starters.

Re-installing the server is not likely to be the answer.

I've been using SME server since the 5.x releases and this is the first severe problem that I've encountered through multiple upgrades.

I'd suggest that you should look through the bug report, and perhaps supply some info from your own server so that the bugs team has another set of data to compare mine to. Charlie and Gavan have detailed the info that they need on the bug report. If you don't want to do that perhaps you could at least leave a comment on the bug report indicating that you are experiencing a similar problem.

Well it appears that the problem I was seeing was due to my SME Server taking a long time to do a spam check on incoming email, which led to the mail server at the other end thinking that I had timed out. This makes sense as I've been seeing quite a lot of VM activity on the server and was already in the process of getting some more RAM to improve performance.

Perhaps you should take a look at your server's performance to see whether the hardware you have is adequate for the number of users that are being supported?
