« on: April 22, 2002, 05:11:24 PM »
I run a web forum off of my server and it is not allowing me to to send email.  I have set up my isp's smtp information and the account and password correctly on both the server os and the Forum application the message I am recieving is.

Ran into problems sending Mail. Response: 502 Command is locally disabled

Any suggestions on how to correct this.

Is your SME server attached directly to the internet or you have some kind of firewall before? What kind of message board is it phpbb? They all have internal mail sever app so there is no need to make any changes (phpbb 1.xx, xforum, Phorum, Postboard).

Well it is attached directly to the internet and the forum I use is PHPBB 2.0  and the forum is giving me the error.  So any more suggestions??

No, not really, but I'd guess it's a problem with the ISP's mail server.  Are you able to set up your SME server to act as your mail server directly (that is, not relaying through your ISP)?  Failing that, I'd suggest checking the phpbb.com forums, as there might be a way to get more detail about what's happening.

Just noticed something, though--if you've set the SME server (using the server manager panel) to relay through your ISP's server, just set phpBB to use 'localhost' with no username or password as the SMTP server.

If you have no mail server configured with phpbb2, it uses it's own. If you have problems with the isp mailserver, you'll get that message.
You've got three choices for sending phpbb2 mail. phpbb2, e-smith, isp server.
Have a go with all three.... Mine runs on the native phpbb2 and has no problems.. I have tested it with the e-smith one, and the isp's is dodgy in the extreme. It is a blessing to have your own when the ISP says "we're moving the mail server and it'll be back online in three hours. Three days later, I reconfigured to use the e-smith one and I can send mail again...
Check to see that you've not configured to relay through the isp's email too.....
