Hi
One of my clients running sme 7.3 seemed to have a power surge. when he booted up he got the error message eth0 in promicuous mode.
I put in a new ethernet adapter but it still looks for the old network adapter
Is there any way around this

Yes, you will need to log in to the console menu and choose the configure my server option, this will pick up your newly installed NIC and once you've rebooted you should be ok.

The problem is that it is not letting me get that far. The boot process stops at the eth0 in promiscuous mode. If I change network adapters it still looks for the old one

Mosty likely as they are set in the modprobe.conf file automatically as they are set by the configuration database.

What is the output of:

I guess this does not read r1000 or whatever it might need to be...

where do I run this from. The only way I can access my sme is by running sme repair from the cd

You should be able to reconfigure from CD or enter interactive boot by pressing I when prompted, give the default answer to all questions apart from the ethernet cards and you should be welcomed by the prompt, login as root and issue the suggested commands.

Regarding, your questions it seems you are very unfamiliar with linux/SME Server, why are you even bothering to compile your own network interface driver? You would be better of buying a supported NIC as every kernel update will need a new compile of your driver.

This is just before services are started up, just follow your boot sequence and you will notice when you need to press I.

I am not trying to compile a new nic driver. I am fairly new to linux/sme but what happened is that I have had the installation working fine for about 6 months. Last night the client said that they had a power failure but their ups blew and the nic as well, or so I suspect.
When the server was booted I get the message that eth0 has entered promiscuous mode. All I am trying to accomplish is for sme to let me install a new nic and configure it to connect to the network. But it does not go past the promiscuous problem. It wont let me reconfigure it with the new network card. The nic's I am using should work fine but sme keeps on looking for the old nic

Is there anyway to force sme to let me change the nic

Oops, I seem to have messed up two threads, my bad. Follow the boot sequence, once all hardware is detected you get a prompt stating to press I to enter interactive mode, this is just before you see all the services start (the list with the OK/NOK between square brackets)

If you do the interactive setup you can try and bypass the loading of the network interface and after that login as admin and reconfigure your server, you should be able to set your new network card there and when it is a supported, functioning card, it should be there after reboot.

the setting in modprobe.conf is alias etho 8139too

Is your old card still in the machine? If so try and remove it. If it is on-board try and disable it in the BIOS.

My old card is onboard but if I disable it in the bios them sme says 8139too Fast Ethernet Driver 0.9.27 and the boot process stops there.
It always seems to look for that card. Is there anyway to override this. People have suggested a re-install but that doesn't seem right.

Yes, it could be right as it will find the installation on your hard disk and should not override it if you choose that option, after that you should be prompted to configure and you should be able to choose the new card. Are you sure the new card is supported?

I am running linksys nic's and I have one in my own personal sme and it picks it up fine. What do you mean it should not override it should I choose that option?
The only option I see available to me is to do sme rescue, but that doesn't let me recofigure my system.
How do we get around the fact that sme keeps on looking for the old card
