Setting up Email - Webmail, any ideas?
« on: June 04, 2008, 09:44:37 PM »
I have been in the process of setting up my home sme server, to control my home network but also to host my business web page. I was able to configure email, to where I can log onto horde and recieve email, but I can not send any email, in the local or external network. I also have forms on my web page, and I have the "submit" button linked to one of my email addresses, but when you try to use the submit button, it says that the link requires a web server and the server to have front page extensions installed corectly. I have no clue what I am doing at this point and have been searching and searching for an answer.... are the problems related, any body have an Idea?? I do have my email delivery settings set up, and they do work, I tried them in ms outlook... any Ideas?

This sounds odd - you should at least be able to send email locally.  My first guess is that you have not told your SME server to accept email for the specific domian name to which you are sending emails - that is, there is no entry in Configuration::Domains that matches the part of your email address that comes after the '@'.

I also have forms on my web page, and I have the "submit" button linked to one of my email addresses, but when you try to use the submit button, it says that the link requires a web server and the server to have front page extensions installed corectly.
Check here: http://www.rtr.com/fpsupport/

Apparently, Font Page Server Extensions are not supported under Apache 2.x, and therefore not on SME server.

... but I can not send any email, in the local or external network.

What does "can not send" mean? What do you see when you try?

I have added all the users that need to be using email, I can send local email, and I can recieve email from the outside. for example... I am currently experimenting with sme server, and I have it set up at my home. its default name when I set it up, was plshome.local I then was experimenting with a mock up of my companys web page. I have added some users, and regesterd a web address with dyndns.org. If I am in hotmail, and send an email from "bob123@hotmail.com to "bob123@testpage-dyndns.org"
I can recieve that email, and read it. When I reply to it, it sends an email and about 2 minutes later, from MAILER-DAEMON@plshome.local and not from the web address I have set up, "bob123@testpage-dyndns.org" that the email has failed. Whay can I possibly be doing wrong, or does sme just not send email outside the network.... any ideaS?

The bounce message will contain text which tells you why it was not delivered.

Ok, so I did a little research on my issue, and someone recomended changing my default settings from "bob@plshome.local" to bob@testcompany.dyndns.org" - So I did.... and now I can send recieve emails, send emails internaly, but now when I send an email to an outside address... It does not give me a delivery failure, but I also never recieve the email as well... any ideas?

any ideas?

As you're using dyndns I assume that you have a dynamic IP address. Many mail providers don't accept mails sent from an dynamic IP. Have a look at the server-manager E-mail panel -> Change e-mail delivery settings -> SMTP Server.
1984 wasn't meant to be a manual.

I have tried that, and it did not work either. I dont understand what I did wrong, as I can recieve email, I can connect with outlook, but I can not send. It does not seem to be my ISP, and according to my documentaiton research, I have everything configured right, maybe its an issue with dyndns. I just email them for any ideas, maybe they can help. all I know is that I am just racking my brains out and getting no where!

Be careful with the exact words you choose. My understanding of what you said is that you can actually send email, but the email you send isn't delivered and isn't bounced. Correct?

Some ISPs these days no longer bounce email which they don't deliver, but instead just delete it.

Is it just some of your sent email which isn't delivered, or is it all? Or don't you know? What is the email address you are sending to?

Have you used the server-manager mail log file analysis feature to see what is happening to your sent email?

all sent mail is lost, however I did discover that in sme, when I tell the server to forword an email for a spacific user, it does forword. after contacting dyndns, apearently it is an issue that I have with them. I need to upgrade my account, or buy mailhop "outgoing" service. Imagine that! Thanks, all who helped. I knew I didnt do anything wrong - but we will see what comes when my web gos live.

dyndns should have nothing to do with your outgoing email.

You need to learn why "all sent mail is lost". Who is losing it?

Ok, so I have purchased outgoing service for dyndns, no luck there. I have tried everything that I can think of, everything that has been suggested to me.... NOTHING. I am about to go nuts. I have called my ISP provider, they tell me that there is nothing wrong at their end, and nothing is being rejected. they can ping my server, send me an email, view my web page but the tech said that there is no MX service set up (that he can see) I have no idea.... My settings are as fallows:
1. SME server has 2 network cards, one to my cable modem, the other to the office network.
2. All users on sme server added. Pseudonyms set up for each user; "bob@sme-webpage.com:user"
3. directorys set up, and set to allow access from internet, admin = full user = read only.
4. Hostnames and addresses, verified that mail was set up; "mail.sme-webpage.com"
5. under email, I have set the settings to as fallows: pop server acess: allow, IMAP server acess: Allow, Webmail access" allow, email retrieval mose: standard (smtp) smtp authentication: disabled (no diffrence between enabled or disabled) email unknown: send to admin, address to internal mail server: left blank and for address of internet service provider, I have set to the defaults that were given to me from when my isp set up my account. i verified all the information, and its works with outlook.
6. Outlook is configured using pop service. smtp and pop are set to mail.sme-webpage.com.
7. When I send an email to "bob@sme-webpage.com" I can recieve it.
8. When I try to send from "bob@sme-webpage.com" it now fails, I get the fallowing error:
task "mail.sme-webpage.com - sending" reported error (0x8004210b) the operation timed out waiting for a response from the sending smtp server. contact your server admin.

....well I am the server admin, and I have no clue! any ideas with the new information??

I figured it out... On my pda, when I was configuring my email, there was no option to change the port number, (was told to change it for some reason or another) so I finished configuring my pda, and never went from there. when I happend to be sending an email, I acidently sent it from the wrong account (my sme server account) it went through. to my amazement, I checked it out, and sure as s$%^ it used port 25, I changed that on all my pc's and re-started my server and WALA! I can send and recieve emails. Amazing.  :-P  :-P  :-P

thanks, all you guys for your help and sugestions!!
