Problems with HylaFax
« on: April 28, 2002, 01:37:28 PM »
Hi,
I’am trying to install HylaFax.
I’am following the HowTo from E-smith.
I have downloaded the following files:

ttfonts-1.0-4.noarch.rpm
chkfontpath-1.9.5-2.i386.rpm
ttfonts-ja-1.2-8.noarch.rpm
compat-libstdc++-6.2-2.9.0.16.i386.rpm
urw-fonts-2.0-12.noarch.rpm
ghostscript-6.51-16.i386.rpm
VFlib2-2.25.1-20.i386.rpm
ghostscript-7.04.tar.gz
XFree86-3.3.5-1.6.0.i386.rpm
ghostscript-fonts-6.0-2.noarch.rpm
XFree86-fonts-base-4.2.0-5.ppc.rpm
hylafax-4.1.2-1rh7.i386.rpm
XFree86-libs-4.2.0-6.62.i386.rpm
libpcap-0.6.2-9.i386.rpm
XFree86-xfs-4.2.0-6.62.i386.rpm
libtiff-3.5.7-2.i386.rpm
xfs-4.2.0-2.i386.rpm
Omni-0.6.0-1.i386.rpm

When I use this command I get this error message:

[root@esmith files]# rpm -Uvh *.rpm

error: failed dependencies:
        libXIE.so.6 is needed by XFree86-3.3.5-1.6.0
        /bin/id   is needed by xfs-4.2.0-2
        /usr/bin/getgid   is needed by xfs-4.2.0-2

What is wrong??

Assuming you are trying to install Hylafax on SME 5.1.2 you have 5 extra RPMs on your list over and above what is listed in the HowTo. It is these extra RPM's that are causing the dependency errors. Remove them and try again.

Hi Jon,
Now I only have the following files;

libtiff-3.5.7-2.i386.rpm
chkfontpath-1.9.5-2.i386.rpm
Omni-0.6.0-1.i386.rpm
compat-libstdc++-6.2-2.9.0.16.i386.rpm
ttfonts-ja-1.0-6.noarch.rpm
urw-fonts-2.0-12.noarch.rpm
ghostscript-6.51-16.i386.rpm
ghostscript-fonts-6.0-2.noarch.rpm
VFlib2-2.25.1-20.i386.rpm
hylafax-4.1.2-1rh7.i386.rpm
XFree86-libs-4.2.0-6.62.i386.rpm
libpcap-0.6.2-9.i386.rpm
XFree86-xfs-4.2.0-6.62.i386.rpm

It is the files there are listed in the How-To, but I still get a error.

[root@esmith files]# rpm -Uvh *.rpm

error: failed dependencies:
        /usr/X11R6/bin/mkfontdir   is needed by XFree86-xfs-4.2.0-6.62

Is it a directory that I needed to create?

No you dont need to create a directory. You need to install the correct versions of the rpms as per the HowTo

XFree86-xfs and XFree-86-lib that you have are the wrong versions. I suggest you read the HowTo again and install the rpm versions exactly as listed.

Hi Jon,
I have all the right rpm files now and there are no error when I use the:
rpm –Uvh *.rpm command.

The next step in the How-To is:

# cd /usr/share/fax
# pico hyla.conf

add the following two lines and then save the file and exit:

FontMap: /usr/share/ghostscript/6.51/lib
FontPath: /usr/share/ghostscript/fonts

I can’t find the directory  /usr/share/fax  and  /usr/share/ghostscript/6.51/lib
But I have the /usr/share/ghostscript/fonts directory

What is wrong?

I would suspect that not all the rpms have installed. I particular the Hylafax and Ghostscript6.51 rpms.
My suggestion would be to go back and try and install each one individually i.e

rpm -Uvh packagename

It will either come back and say "installing" or package already installed.

I have noticed in the past that using the

rpm -Uvh *.rpm  command sometimes skips installing a rpm or two.

Just for future reference

I have found that if you use the latest rpm from the hylafax site (ie hylafax-4.1.2-1rh7.i386.rpm) you need not make any modifications to the installation scripts.

It works "out of the box" so to speak. The newer version is a good deal easier to set up in a lot of cases as well.
